Finding the perfect book can feel a little overwhelming. With so many choices on library shelves and in digital collections, it is easy to wonder where to begin. The good news is that there is no “right” way to choose a book. Reading should be enjoyable, personal, and sometimes even surprising. Whether you are an avid reader or someone trying to read more this year, here are a few helpful tips for finding your next great read.

First, think about what you already enjoy. Your favorite movies, television shows, hobbies, or podcasts can offer clues about the types of books you might like. If you enjoy mysteries on television, try a suspense novel or detective series. If you love history documentaries, you may enjoy historical fiction or biographies. Readers who enjoy cooking, gardening, or crafting can often find wonderful nonfiction books that match their interests.

Another great tip is to remember that you do not have to stick to one genre. Many readers discover new favorites when they branch out. Someone who usually reads romance may unexpectedly enjoy science fiction or memoirs. Trying something different every once in a while can keep reading exciting and fresh. Libraries are perfect places to explore new genres because you can borrow books without the pressure of purchasing them first.

Do not underestimate the value of browsing. Sometimes the perfect book is the one that simply catches your eye. A beautiful cover, an interesting title, or a short description on the inside flap can spark curiosity. Take a few extra minutes to wander through the shelves. Libraries are designed for discovery, and browsing often leads readers to books they may never have searched for online.

Recommendations are also incredibly helpful. Friends, family members, librarians, and book clubs are excellent sources for finding books you may love. Librarians especially enjoy helping readers connect with books. If you tell us a few books you enjoyed in the past, we can often suggest authors or titles with similar themes or writing styles. Each month, we also create themed displays to help patrons discover something new.

Another useful strategy is to give yourself permission to stop reading a book that is not working for you. Not every book will be the right fit at the right time, and that is okay. Reading should not feel like a chore. If a book does not capture your interest after several chapters, you can always try another one. We are limited on time, so as I tell my book club, stop reading a book you do not enjoy! Sometimes the perfect book is simply waiting on the next shelf.

Finally, consider trying different formats. Some readers prefer physical books, while others enjoy eBooks or audiobooks. Audiobooks are especially popular for commuters, travelers, or busy parents who want to enjoy stories while multitasking. There is no wrong way to read.

The perfect book often finds us when we least expect it. A library card opens the door to countless possibilities, adventures, and ideas. Whether you leave with a bestselling novel, a cookbook, a memoir, or a children’s story to share with your family, every book has the potential to become someone’s favorite. The next time you visit the library, take a chance on something new—you may discover a story you will never forget.
