Cavemen Fall to Volcano Vista 38-17

The eighth-ranked Carlsbad Cavemen absorbed a tough 38-17 loss to the fifth-ranked Volcano Vista Hawks in Carlsbad on Friday night, September 18.

Despite the score and a few too many miscues, the Cavemen played ball with the heavily favored Hawks throughout the night.

Down 24-10 at the half, Carlsbad battled back to score first in the third period to close the gap to 24-17. But a late score by the Hawks in the third and another in the fourth gave Volcano Vista the win, 38-17.

Only 18 total yards separated the two teams in the stat book. On the night, the Hawks picked up 344 total yards, 212 passing and 132 rushing. The Cavemen, close behind, gathered in 326 total yards, 95 passing and 231 rushing.

Signal caller Marley Munoz completed nine of 22 passes for 87 yards, a touchdown, and four picks. On the ground, he led CHS’s rushing effort. On 23 carries, he picked up 137 yards and a touchdown. Running back Brock Wright, six yards shy of 100, carried the ball 18 times for 94 tough yards.

Wideout Jaxson Duarte, with five catches for 55 yards and a touchdown, led all Cavemen receivers.

Defensive leaders for CHS were Colton McKibben, 3T-10A; Trey Barta, 3T-6A-TFL; Damian Valencia, 2T-8A; Baily King, 1T-9A; and Tyler Jaymes Gillespie, 3T-3A.

With the loss, Carlsbad fell to 3-2 on the season; in District 2/6A play, they’re 0-2. Volcano Vista, with the win, jumped to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

The Cavemen will host the 1-4 Clovis Wildcats on Friday night, September 25, for their 2026 Homecoming game.
