Cavemen Harriers Capture NMMI Invite

CHS harriers Javion Scott, Rex Reynolds and Kaleb Vasquez finished 2-4-5 to lead the Cavemen to an NMMI Cross Country Invitational Championship in Roswell on Saturday, September 19.

Carlsbad’s boys scored a meet-low 31 points to claim this year’s NMMI event. Second place went to Hagerman with 71 points, while the NMMI Broncos, with 78, placed third. Carlsbad nemesis Hobbs, with 83 points, finished fourth. Nine teams, comprised of 71 runners, competed.

Scott, in placing second, traversed the course in a time of 16:15.58. En route to placing fourth, Reynolds posted a time of 16:38.58. Vasquez, in grabbing fifth, registered a 16:48.48.

Closing out Carlsbad’s championship effort were eighth, Josiah Waddle, 17:07.91; 12th, Kleyvin Hernandez, 17:25.91; and 20th, Caisen Smith, 17:52.19.

“We saw a significant improvement from our boys over their performance at LCU in Lubbock last week,” said CHS head Cross Country coach Mike Sims. “They all posted personal bests at NMMI. All the hard work they’ve been putting in is really beginning to show.”

Cavegirls 5th at NMMI

The Cavegirls, behind Rainelle Ruiz’s sixth place showing, finished fifth overall at the NMMI Invitational. Seven teams, featuring 58 runners, comprised the field.

On her way to place fourth, Ruiz posted a time of 20:43.89. Soledad Martinez crossed the finish line second for the Cavegirls. The CHS harrier placed 15th with a time of 21:53.14.

Also contributing points for Carlsbad’s girls were 22nd Harmonie Frye, 22:30.89; 33rd Alessandra Aguilar, 23:48.90; and 38th Jocelyn Baca, 24:47.14.

“We saw a lot of improvement at NMMI, but not just from our boys’ program. As with the boys, several of our girls posted personal or season bests also, which is always encouraging,” said coach Sims. “Also encouraging was that our girls beat Roswell, one of our district opponents, which shows they’re still in the running to qualify for state.

“As a team, this has been the best meet of the season for our girls,” he said. “I think we’ll see another jump in their performance at Roswell High on Saturday, September 26.”

JV Boys 1st, Girls 3rd

Gavyn Jones, Makaio Rodriguez, and Alan Bautista finished among the Top 10 runners in the NMMI Cross Country Invitational’s Junior Varsity Division, leading Carlsbad to a first-place finish.

The Cavegirl JVs, behind Jollie Aguillard and Ariel Gonzalez, placed third.
