From Open Mic to Oktoberfest: Milton’s Prepares for Busy Season in Downtown Carlsbad

The downtown scene is set for a busy autumn as Milton’s Brewing prepares to host a series of events ranging from live music and food trucks to its signature Keg Olympics and a debut of October Fest ale.

As five o’clock nears on a Tuesday, the bar starts filling up at Milton’s Brewery. Michelle Robertson, the manager on duty, gets pulled away a few times to pour glasses for the customers coming in to start their evening.

For the interview, she is asked about the upcoming calendar of events Milton’s has in store for Carlsbad. It’s obvious that the schedule builds on the success of last Friday’s block party, which featured live music, a food truck, and a strong turnout along Mermod Street.

“It was very fun. It was really nice,” Robertson said.

The flagship event, Septembeer Fest, is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, from noon to 10 p.m. in and outside of Milton’s. The celebration will close off portions of Mermod and Canyon streets to make way for vendors, food trucks, and a stage with live music with a designated seating area.

Highlights include weenie dog races, a beard and mustache contest, a costume contest, and what has become a crowd favorite: the Keg Olympics.

Keg Olympics competitors form teams of two, and Robertson noted that the reigning champions are both firefighters.

“We’ll see if anybody can come beat them,” she said. “It’ll be a tough battle.”

Contestants will practice their stein-holding and carrying an empty keg overhead, though Robertson warned that the empty vessel is not as easy to handle as it might seem.

“It’s just a day of fun downtown to celebrate all things beer and music and Milton’s Brewing.”

Before the main festivity, Milton’s will hold a tap takeover at Lucky Bull on Thursday, September 10. The upstairs event will feature live music from the local band Severen. They will also perform at Septembeer Fest. Attendees will have the first chance to try the brewery’s new October Fest ale, which debuts that day. The brewery will also give away merchandise and provide snacks.

Robertson encouraged patrons to check miltonsbrewing.com for updates, noting that the events tab displays current month listings, with new events added at the start of each month.

Beyond the September highlights, Milton’s maintains a steady roster of weekly and monthly happenings. Dart league meets every Monday night at 6 p.m. Music bingo takes place every other Tuesday at 6 p.m., and trivia nights are held two Wednesdays per month. Live music, karaoke, and open mic nights also rotate through the taproom.

The next open mic night is Friday, September 11, with sign-ups available online. Performers get approximately 15 minutes on stage.

“We’ve had some great success with open mic night,” Robertson said. “We have a guy who started out playing open mic nights, and now he’s got a band and gigs all around town. So, it’s a good thing to come do.”

Looking ahead to October, the brewery will host “Scaryoke” on October 30. She also noted that “Boos and Books,” a recurring event held on the third Wednesday of each month, continues through the fall.

On Friday, November 13, Milton’s will present a Sasquatch and Friends party, featuring a traveling banjo player

Robertson added, “The brewery will also have a booth at the upcoming Renaissance Festival,” which seems like a natural match and is sure to be a favorite among the attendees.

With a mix of competitive games, live music, and seasonal beer releases, Milton’s is positioning itself as a year-round gathering spot for locals and visitors alike. The Septembeer Fest alone promises a full day of entertainment, and the tap takeover at Lucky Bull offers an early taste of fall flavors

For those interested in participating in the Keg Olympics, trivia, or open mic nights, Robertson said the brewery welcomes newcomers and regulars alike.

“We’ll block off the streets, we’ll have vendors, we’ll have music,” she said. “It’s just a day of fun.”
