The Cavegirl volleyball team is looking good! Following a tough 3-0 loss to the league-leading Clovis Wildcats on Thursday, October 15, on the road, Carlsbad’s girls battled back to spank the Roswell Coyotes 3-1 on Tuesday, October 20, in the Alien City.

With the victory, the Cavegirls finished out the first round of District 4/5A play sitting at 2-1 and in second place. The win upped their overall record to 9-8. In Class 5A play, they’re currently ranked 17th by MaxPreps.

On Tuesday, October 27, the Cavegirls will be in Hobbs to close out a tough three-game road trek. In their first meeting with Hobbs, Carlsbad downed the Lady Eagles 3-1.

Assuming the Cavegirls will get by Hobbs and the District 4/5A pace-setting Clovis Wildcats (13-7, 3-0) will defeat the Roswell Coyotes on Tuesday, October 27, Carlsbad will host Clovis on Thursday, October 29, for a share of the District 4/5A lead.

A victory over Clovis would leave both the Wildcats and Cavegirls holding identical 5-1 district records. However, for Carlsbad to grab the inside track on the 2026 district title, they’d also have to win a tiebreaker, based on the total number of points scored in both conference games by each of the two schools.

In Carlsbad and Clovis’ first meeting, on October 15, the Wildcats downed the Cavegirls 3-0. In doing so, they recorded 75 total points to Carlsbad’s 49. As a result, they’ll carry a plus-26-point differential with them when the two teams square off. Advantage Wildcats.

Although facing what appears to be insurmountable odds, playing in Carlsbad, it is doable for the Cavegirls.

Should Carlsbad win but lose the tiebreaker, they’ll need some help from the Hobbs Eagles—who lost to the Wildcats 3-0 earlier this year—in the final game of the season to grab the conference title.

However, should all those marbles fall into place, Carlsbad will still have to beat the Roswell Coyotes in the Cavern City on Thursday, November 5, to claim this year’s District 4/5A championship. So, for Carlsbad’s girls, there’s still a lot to play for over the next couple of weeks.

Although expected, Cavegirl fans should keep in mind that all these scenarios will unfold only if both Carlsbad and Clovis win on October 27. Game times for the Carlsbad vs. Clovis matchup in the Cavern City on October 29 are set for 5 p.m. for the JVs and 6 p.m. for the varsities.

Under the tutelage of head coach Taylor Hardison, the Cavegirls have traveled a road of steady progression in 2026. Last year at this time, with three games remaining on their schedule, they were 5-14 overall and 1-2 in district. At season’s end, they were ranked 24th in Class 5A volleyball.

“Our girls have improved a great deal this season,” said Hardison. “They’ve battled the ups and downs of our season really hard, and because of it, they’ve grown, matured, and still have a shot at winning the district title and going to state.

“They’ve overcome the odds a lot this year,” said Hardison. “And although the odds are somewhat stacked against them as we head into the second half of our district season, our coaching staff has a lot of confidence in them. We know what they’re capable of accomplishing, and we feel, with a little luck, they can make all the positive things still ahead of them happen.”

Soccer Closes Out 2026

The Cavemen and Cavegirl soccer teams, both with losses to Roswell on Tuesday, October 20, have closed out the 2026 season.

The Cavemen ended their season at 2-17-1. In District 4/5A play, they were 0-6. The Cavegirls were 2-15-3 on the year, and following a 1-1 tie with Clovis on October 17, 0-4-2 in conference.
