With the new school year underway, students and parents are settling into homework routines, classroom assignments, and academic goals. Whether your child is just beginning kindergarten or preparing for college, Carlsbad Public Library offers a variety of free resources designed to support learning and help students succeed throughout the school year.

One of the most valuable resources available to New Mexico residents is Brainfuse HelpNow, an online tutoring service that connects students with live tutors and academic support. Through Brainfuse, students can receive one-on-one help with subjects such as math, science, reading, writing, and social studies. Live tutoring sessions are available daily, and students can also access writing assistance, test preparation tools, study guides, and practice exams. Brainfuse even offers support in both English and Spanish. The service is available free of charge with a library card through New Mexico’s statewide database program.

Brainfuse is part of El Portal, New Mexico’s online gateway to a wealth of educational resources. Funded by the New Mexico State Library, El Portal provides access to dozens of databases that would otherwise require expensive subscriptions. Students can find magazine articles, academic journals, newspapers, encyclopedias, and trusted reference materials covering virtually every school subject. Whether researching a science project, writing a history paper, or exploring future career options, El Portal offers reliable information that goes far beyond a simple internet search.

Many students and parents are surprised to learn just how much academic support is available through these online resources. In addition to live tutoring, Brainfuse offers tools to improve writing skills, prepare for standardized tests, and build study habits. Older students and job seekers can also benefit from Brainfuse JobNow, which provides résumé assistance, interview preparation, and career coaching.

The Carlsbad Public Library also provides access to numerous research databases through our website. These databases contain information from reputable publishers and educational organizations, making them excellent resources for homework assignments, classroom projects, and independent learning. Unlike many websites found through search engines, library databases offer accurate, vetted information that educators and researchers trust.

Beyond online resources, the library continues to offer the personal support that has always been at the heart of our mission. Library staff are available to help students locate materials, navigate databases, find books for assignments, and learn how to conduct effective research. We understand that every student learns differently, and we are committed to helping each learner find the tools they need to succeed.

The library is more than a place to check out books—it is a partner in education. From early literacy resources for young readers to tutoring services and research databases for older students, Carlsbad Public Library is here to support learning at every stage.

As the school year continues, we encourage students, parents, and educators to take advantage of these free resources. A library card opens the door to tutoring, research tools, educational databases, and countless opportunities for learning and growth. Visit Carlsbad Public Library or explore our website to discover how we can help make this school year a successful one.
