ConocoPhillips, United Way Announce Workforce Scholarship Program

The United Way of Eddy County’s Cinco De Mayo Golf Tournament has been an important part of the local nonprofit’s annual fundraising effort for some time.

Now, thanks to a partnership with ConocoPhillips, the UWEC’s festive three-person scramble will allow the nonprofit to add multiple scholarships aimed at supporting workforce development across Eddy County.

This year’s tournament takes place on May 2 at the Riverside Country Club in Carlsbad, with ConocoPhillips serving as the title sponsor. Proceeds from the tournament will aid the UWEC’s scholarship effort and provide general program support.

Kyle Marksteiner, Executive Director of the United Way of Eddy County, said the nonprofit has had a small scholarship program for a number of years.

“We really wanted to do something more with the program,” he said. “ConocoPhillips has an amazing history of supporting small business training initiatives in the community. We’re honored to be a part of their latest effort to bolster the workforce in one of our nation’s busiest energy corridors.”

The partnership scholarship program will use funds generated from the golf tournament to triple the average number of scholarships the UWEC provides per year, and to significantly increase the amount being offered. The UWEC is accepting applications from both high school seniors and from “nontraditional” applicants. Applicants do not have to plan to attend college; they may also use the scholarship for trade or vocational school or for training opportunities that advance their career. The scholarship is offered county-wide.
