Neither lightning delays nor the Lovington Wildcats could derail the Carlsbad Cavemen from picking up their third win of the season, versus no losses, on Friday night, September 4, in the Cavern City.

And pick up their third win they did. Amassing 364 yards of total offense, 142 through the air and 222 on the ground, the Cavemen routed the Wildcats 48-14.

Taking notice of the Cavemen’s perfect slate was MaxPreps. This week, September 6 through 13, the New Mexico pollster has ranked Carlsbad High sixth among Class 6A football teams, up two spots from last week.

“Our kids played hard, and in the end, picked up a big win for us against Lovington. But, hidden among the 48 points we scored were a lot of mistakes, especially in the area of our offensive execution,” said Cavemen head football coach Cale Sanders.

“Obviously we won’t be able to get away with making a lot of mistakes against third-ranked Centennial. Hopefully, by game time, we’ll have made all the corrections we need to compete effectively with the Hawks.”

Cavemen 48, Lovington 14

Offensively, in Carlsbad’s 48-14 win over Lovington, CHS was led by Caveman quarterback Marley Munoz, who rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns, and running back

/Brock Wright, who ran for 97 yards and one touchdown.

Through the air, Munoz threw for 142 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Jaxson Duarte hauled in 107 of those yards on nine catches. On three of his receptions, Duarte carried the ball into the end zone for touchdowns, one from 44 yards out.

Defensively, Carlsbad held the Wildcats to 261 total yards and two touchdowns.

Three Cavemen recorded double-digit tackles in the game. They were Colton McKibben, five tackles and seven assists; Trey Barta, four tackles and six assists; and Damian Valencia, five tackles and six assists.

Juan Rubio lit up the crowd with his defensive play. The CHS linebacker registered two assists, a fumble recovery and, after intercepting a Wildcat pass, ran the ball back from 25 yards out for a touchdown.

Also having big nights were Bailey King, who pulled down an interception, and Isaiah Gaitan, who registered CHS’s lone sack. He also had two tackles for losses.
