Cavemen Notch 2nd Win

The never-say-die Cavemen soccer team keeps battling tough opponents and the odds despite facing some stiff competition during a year in which new head coach Aaron Babcock continues to rebuild the program.

On Saturday, September 5, during the Roswell High Invitational, the Cavemen notched their second win of the season with a 5-0 victory over the Valencia Jaguars.

It was a big day offensively for the Cavemen, who have been struggling to put points on the board this season.

Scoring for CHS were Joshiah Workman, unassisted off a turnover; Bailey King off a corner kick from Sebastian Castillo; Geovanni Mendoza on an assist from Sebastian Castillo; Abner Galindo off a corner kick from Lorenzo Munoz; and Alonso Miramontes on an assist from Geovanni Mendoza.

Teaming up to register the Cavemen shutout over Valencia were Kyle Mayrhofen and Asher Carreon.

Overall, the Cavemen went 1-2 at the Roswell Invitational. Besides knocking off Valencia 5-0 for their second win of the season, they also dropped games to Organ Mt., 4-0, and Las Cruces, 4-2.

Scoring for the goal-thirsty Cavemen vs. Las Cruces were Tyson Aycock on a free kick from 30 yards out and Alonso Miramontes on an assist from Jefferson Vasquez.

On Tuesday, September 8, the Cavemen fell to a very talented Goddard High Rocket squad, 6-0. With the loss, CHS fell to 2-7-1 on the year. Next up for the Carlsbad kickers: the Lovington Wildcats on Saturday, September 12.

CHS Volleyball On a Roll

Down 1-2 to the Ruidoso Warriors following the first three sets of play, the Cavegirl volleyball team roared back to win the final two, 25-15, 15-11, to topple the Lady Warriors, 3-2, in Ruidoso on Thursday, September 3.

The victory upped Carlsbad’s record to 3-2 and put them on a course to pick up two more. On Saturday, September 5, in Las Cruces, they downed the Santa Teresa Desert Warriors, 3-0, and the Roswell Coyotes, 3-2.

Following two opening-season losses, the three wins made it five in a row for the Cavegirls, who now sit at 5-2.

On Friday and Saturday, September 11-12, the Cavegirls will travel to the Alien City to compete in the Roswell Invitational.

Cavegirl Soccer Report

Although continuing to knock on the door for another win during the week of September 3 through September 8, the Cavegirls came up just short once again.

On Thursday, September 3, Carlsbad’s girls dropped a close one to the Centennial Hawks, 2-1, and on Saturday, September 5, they fell to the Mayfield Trojans, 3-0.

The Cavegirls were scheduled to host the Portales Rams on Tuesday night, September 8. At Carlsbad Local press time, no score had been posted through MaxPreps.

The Cavegirls, 1-4-1, will be in the Duke City on Thursday through Saturday, September 10-12, to compete in the Albuquerque Academy Tournament.
