Carlsbad High’s cross country teams continue to make strides during 2026.

On Saturday, September 4, at the UNM Cross Country Invitational, the Cavemen, in a field comprised of 28 teams and 205 runners, placed among the meet’s top 10 teams.

Led by Javion Scott, who turned in a time of 17:25.60 to place 32nd, the Cavemen scored 239 points to place eighth. Josiah Waddle, as with Scott, also finished among the meet’s top 30. Having posted a time of 17:41.03, he placed 39th.

Rounding out the Cavemen’s scoring were 42. Kaleb Vasquez, 17:47.08; 54. Rex Reynolds, 18:03.67; 102. Caisen Smith, 19:07.90; 113. Kleyvin Hernandez, 19:26.60; and 144. Gavyn Jones, 20:12.76.

“This is, at a large meet like this, one of the best performances ever turned in by our boys’ program,” said CHS Cross Country Coach Mike Sims. “For us, it’s a good sign. They’re showing that they’re ready to compete with some pretty tough teams.

“As for the girls, we only entered three runners for the UNM meet,” said the CHS coach. “However, we do plan on running a full squad at our next meet.”

Rainelle Ruiz, with a time of 21.49.86, paced the Cavegirl effort. She placed 46th. Ruiz was followed by Soledad Martinez, 102nd with a time of 23:43.22, and Alessandra Aguilar, 120th with a time of 25:05.20.

Next up for CHS’s harriers is the LCU Invitational on Saturday, September 12, in Lubbock.
