The District 4/5A cross country tournament, a meet the Cavemen and Cavegirls have been preparing for since day one of the 2026 season, will get underway Friday, October 30, in Clovis.

The Cavemen, who have made huge strides throughout the year, have high hopes of grabbing this year’s District 4/5A championship and more.

“Our boys have really improved this year, and right now they’re peaking out at the right time,” said CHS head coach Michael Sims. “If they perform up to their capabilities and we can keep them all healthy, they’re going to have a great shot at winning our District title and this year’s state championship.

“Our Cavegirls are also primed and ready to compete at district,” he said. “Although they haven’t experienced the same level of success the boys have this year, we’re confident they’ll run well at district and qualify for state.”

Lining up for the Cavemen in Clovis will be Rex Reynolds, Javion Scott, Kaleb Vasquez, Josiah Waddle, Mason Medrano, Kleyvin Hernandez, Caisen Smith, Gavyn Jones, and Makaio Rodriguez.

Taking their marks for the Cavegirls will be Rainelle Ruiz, Soledad Martinez, Alessandra Aguilar, Harmonie Frye, Jollie Aguillard, Chaleesta Gonzalez, Jocelyn Baca, and Jeanette Gonzalez.

The top three teams in both the girls’ and boys’ divisions will advance to the state meet in Albuquerque on Saturday, November 7.

Bob Jackson Invitational

The Cavemen placed third and the Cavegirls fourth at the Bob Jackson Invitational, held in Hobbs on October 24.

Caisen Smith, with a time of 17:49.30, placed fifth to lead the Cavemen effort. Harmonie Frye finished eighth, with a time of 23:15.10, to pace the Cavegirls.

“In anticipation of our District tournament, we held out several of our varsity runners to give them an extra week’s rest,” said CHS head coach Michael Sims. “We saw a lot of very positive things though from the kids who did compete for us in Hobbs and couldn’t have been more pleased with their performances.”

Cavegirls Drop Tough One to Hobbs

The Hobbs Eagles threw a wrench in the Cavegirls’ plans of capturing a District 4/5A volleyball championship. In Hobbs on Tuesday night, October 27, the Eagles grabbed a tough-fought five-set, 3-2, victory over Carlsbad.

Following the loss to Hobbs, in order for the Cavegirls to have a shot at this year’s district title, they’d have to sweep the conference-leading Clovis Wildcats on Thursday, October 29, and the Roswell Coyotes on Thursday, November 5, and then get some help along the way.

As our sports deadline is on Wednesday, Thursday’s, October 29, Cavegirl vs. Clovis game results will be posted in the November 6 edition of the Carlsbad Local.

The Cavegirls will close out regular-season play on November 5 in Carlsbad against Roswell.
