Carlsbad High School hosted the Eddy County Qualifier on Thursday, March 12. Competing with CHS were Loving and Artesia.

"We had a good meet and were able to run all of our athletes," said CHS head track and field coach Charles Millar. "Our kids improved in almost every single event, which is awesome.

"However, Sophia Trujillo was our only athlete to qualify for state. She qualified in the shot put with a throw of 35' 10", he said. "Right now, Sophia and her teammate, Atria Wells, are the only two girls in Class 5A who have qualified for this year's state meet in the shot put."

To date, CHS has qualified five athletes for state. Having already qualified, along with Wells and Trujillo, are Cassie Bielstein in the triple jump and Jonah Moyers and Marley Munoz in the high jump.

"We saw a lot of outstanding efforts by our kids at the Eddy County Qualifier," said Millar. "Some of those efforts in the field events actually hit state-qualifying marks. But those efforts were disqualified due to scratches."

On Friday, March 20, the Cavemen and Cavegirl track teams will compete at the Rolla Black Invitational in Alamogordo. Events are scheduled to get underway at noon.
