With an overpowering performance against their archrival, the Hobbs Eagles, Carlsbad High’s Cavegirl volleyball team sent out a loud message to their district opponents.

In Carlsbad on Tuesday afternoon, October 13, the Cavegirls opened District 4/5A play by sweeping the Eagles 3-0.

The victory got CHS off to a quick and successful start in their run to capture this year’s District 4/5A crown.

With the win, Carlsbad, 1-0, shares the conference’s top spot with the Clovis Wildcats. The Wildcats knocked off the Roswell Coyotes, 3-0, in their league opener.

According to Cavegirl head coach Taylor Hardison, life’s very good right now around the Cavegirl volleyball camp.

“We’re all really excited and ready to keep going,” said an elated Hardison. “We’ve been preparing for conference play all season long. Getting off with a win, we couldn’t feel better.”

Following a tough-fought 25-22 opening set victory, the Cavegirls cruised through the final two sets 25-13 and 25-15 en route to the win.

“Although we got off to a good start in the opening game, we got out of sync a bit as it moved on,” said the Cavegirl coach. “But, to our girls’ credit, they pulled themselves together, got their footing back under them, and rallied to dominate Hobbs during the final two sets.”

Hardison, in picking up the W, credited the serving of Abigail Chavez, Jasenia Gonzales, Macie Stevens, and Brinley Brantley, along with the efforts of all of her girls to step up when things began to go awry, especially libero Arianna Garcia.

“Arianna does a great job of keeping everybody together, focused, and on the same page,” said Hardison. “A leader, she’s a very important cog in our efforts to win every night. That was especially true against the Eagles.”

Following their win over the Eagles, the Cavegirls have embarked on a rough three-game district road trek. On Thursday, October 15, they battled the league favorite Clovis Wildcats (results to be posted in the October 23 edition of the Local). On Tuesday, October 20, they’re scheduled to be in Roswell to take on the Lady Coyotes, and on Tuesday, October 27, they’ll be in Hobbs to, once again, take on the Lady Eagles.

Cavemen Soccer Report

On Tuesday, October 13, on the road, the Carlsbad Cavemen dropped a tough-fought 4-1 match to the Hobbs Eagles. The Eagles are currently ranked No. 2 in Class 5A soccer and statewide.

CHS’s goal in the second half came off the foot of Alonso Miramontes on an assist from Bailey King.

“Our kids couldn’t have played much harder; they definitely left it all on the field. In no way did the score reflect just how well our young guys played, “ said Cavemen head coach Aaron Babcock. “Tied at the half 0-0, we kept the score close during the second period 1-1, and then at 2-1, until the Eagles scored two late ones.

“Despite our record, our kids have definitely made some strides in growth and maturity this year,” he said. “They battle hard every week. As their coach, that’s all I can ask of them.”

With the loss, the Cavemen dropped to 0-4 in conference play and 2-15-1 on the year.
