Carlsbad’s Colton McKibben and Cassie Bielstein turned in exceptional performances at the Rolla Buck White Sands Track and Field Invitational held in Alamogordo on Friday, March 20.

On the day, McKibben, with a toss of 51’5,” qualified for state in the shot put, and Bielstein, with a time of 16.64, qualified in the 100 hurdles. Both of their efforts were good enough to earn gold medals for first-place finishes. Bielstein, with a leap of 33’6,” also placed first in the triple jump.

“Colton was incredible! He’s been improving in the shot put all year, and he finally figured it out,” said CHS head track coach Charles Millar. “He qualified on five of his six throws and almost had a 6’ PR. He has been our do-it-all athlete this year!

“Cassie, a little tweaked up last year, has also been looking great. This year, she’s been running healthy, and she’s dominating,” said Millar. “She’s finished among the top two in every single event she’s competed in this year, the 100 meter hurdles, long jump, and triple jump.”

The qualifying mark for this year’s state tournament is 47’6” in the boys’ shot put and 16.75 in the girls’ 100 meter hurdles.

But McKibben and Bielstein’s efforts weren’t the only noteworthy CHS performances in Alamogordo. Overall, three other Cavemen and four Cavegirls medaled as both Carlsbad teams, boys and girls, finished third in what turned out to be a very competitive meet.

“I’m really impressed with the kids’ effort. Alamogordo had some very good teams there, and we were able to hold our own,” said the CHS coach. “We’re a young squad, too, so I am excited that we’re building some confidence in both the boys’ and girls’ programs. I’m very excited to see what we’ll be able to accomplish at our district tournament.”
