Cultural Currency Exhibit Opens at Carlsbad Museum

By Michele Robertson

The Carlsbad Museum is hosting a new exhibit called Cultural Currency. This exhibit opens on Friday, November 1, and closes on January 25. An opening reception will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 16. There will be hors d’oeuvres, and Museum Director Edward VanScotter will speak briefly about the exhibit.

The upcoming programming to go with this exhibit will focus on financial literacy and is provided by Ashley Switzer with Financial Security Credit Union (FSCU) and Nick Walker with Edward Jones.

November 9: Piggy Bank decorating

November 12: “Mastering the Basics” (financial literacy with Ashley Switzer)

December 10: “The Credit Journey” (financial literacy with Ashley Switzer)

December 14: paper money origami class with Jane Harrington

January 14: “Investments and your Future” (financial literacy with Ashley Switzer and Nick Walker)

“Visitors to our financial literacy presentation can expect to gain practical, real-world advice on managing personal finances, including budgeting, saving, and building credit. They’ll learn strategies for reducing debt, setting financial goals, and planning for the future. The presentation will also introduce resources and tools available through the credit union to help attendees make informed financial decisions, all to foster financial independence and security, as well as the importance and benefits of credit union membership,” said Ashley Switzer, Marketing Representative, CUCME, CUBDP with FSCU.

“It is important to learn about financial literacy because it empowers people to make informed decisions, manage money effectively and wisely, avoid debt, save for the future, invest, and build financial stability and a strong financial foundation,” Switzer added.

“Hosting these kinds of exhibits is a way to bring world-class exhibitions to the people of Carlsbad who may not have a chance to see them otherwise. The fact that we can provide such exhibits to the people of Carlsbad and tourists coming through—free of charge—is a unique benefit that Carlsbad Museum and the City of Carlsbad provide to the community,” VanScotter said.

You can visit the museum from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturdays at 418 W. Fox St. They have Facebook and Instagram and can be reached by phone at (575) 887-0276 or by email at museumstaff@cityofcarlsbadnm.com, Admission is always free, donations are appreciated, and some classes have fees.
