Cavegirls Sweep Lovington Wildcats 3-0

The Carlsbad Cavegirl volleyball team, after dropping their first two matches of 2026 to Centennial and Mayfield, upped their record to 2-2 with a 3-0 victory over the Lovington Wildcats on Tuesday night, September 1, in Carlsbad.

“Our girls played really well, and everyone contributed to the win,” said Cavegirl assistant coach Rylan Gonzalez. “We tried a few new things against Lovington, things that we’ve been working hard on in practice, and they worked well for us.

“It was a lot of fun watching them compete,” she said. “Over the past couple of weeks, they’ve gained a lot of confidence, and it showed against Lovington.”

On Friday, September 4, the Carlsbad girls will be in City of Crosses to compete in the Las Cruces Tournament. On Thursday, September 3, they battled the Ruidoso Warriors in Ruidoso. Results of those contests will be posted in the September 11 edition of the Carlsbad Local.

Cavegirl and Cavemen Soccer

So far in 2026, the road traveled by both the Cavemen and Cavegirl soccer teams has been a bumpy one.

According to MaxPreps, as of Saturday, August 29, the Cavegirls had accumulated a record of 1-2-1, and the Cavemen 1-4-1.

But hitting a few bumps in the road as they traverse their 2026 schedules shouldn’t be entirely unexpected, as both teams, in rebuilding mode, attempt to bounce back from difficult 2025 seasons.

However, as bumpy as the road has been for both of CHS’s soccer squads, they are making progress.

After dropping a 2-1 encounter with the Gadsden Panthers on Friday, August 28, at the Las Cruces Public Schools Invitational, the Cavegirls rallied to post their first win of the new year, 1-0, over the Goddard Rockets.

Scoring for Carlsbad in their win over the Rockets was Buggy Renfro on an assist from Star Herrera. Goalie Serenity Medrano logged three saves.

Unfortunately, the CHS girls dropped their Saturday, August 29, contest to Clovis 2-1.

The Cavemen, also at the LCPS Invitational, grabbed their first win of 2026, a 2-0 victory over the Mayfield JVs.

“We dominated possession and shots; we just couldn’t get anything to drop for us,” said Cavemen head coach Aaron Babcock. “We won 2-0, but it should have been by more. Nevertheless, it was a big one for our kids, their first of the year, and our staff couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Scoring for CHS on an assist from Sebastian Castillo was Aloso Miramontes, and on an assist from Aiden Cox, Tyson Aycock.

Overall, at the LCPS event, the Cavemen went 1-2, dropping games to Mayfield 2-0 and Roswell 8-0.

On Friday and Saturday, September 4-5, the Cavemen will compete at the Roswell Invitational. Times are TBA.

On Saturday, September 5, the Cavegirls will be at home to entertain the Mayfield Trojans. Game times are set for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
