Cavemen Roll Over Goddard Rockets 35-19

Quarterback Marley Munoz ran for four touchdowns and threw for another, a 20-yard strike to wideout Jaxson Duarte, to lead the Carlsbad Cavemen past the Goddard Rockets 35-19 on August 28 in Roswell.

Munoz, having a hand in all five CHS scores, rushed for 131 yards and threw for 104. On the night, CHS picked up 386 total yards of offense, 263 rushing and 123 passing.

Also having a big night with the ball in his hands was CHS running back Brock Wright. Wright, on just 20 carries, picked up 118 yards, an average of 5.9 yards per carry.

Carlsbad’s defense, led by middle linebacker Colton McKibben’s seven tackles, seven assists, and two tackles for a loss, held the Rockets’ offense to just 251 total yards. On the ground, Goddard was able to muster just 60 yards.

Also having big nights defensively for the Cavemen, with multiple tackles, were Trey Barta, four tackles, three assists, and a tackle for loss; Damian Valencia, four tackles and three assists; Lennon Ananins, four tackles, two assists, and a tackle for loss; and Juan Rubio, two tackles and two assists.

With the victory, the Class 6A eighth-ranked Cavemen elevated their season record to 2-0. On MaxPreps’ statewide poll, they’ve also been ranked No. 8.

On Friday night, September 4, in the Cavern City, the Cavemen will face off against the 1-1 Lovington Wildcats. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
