Cross Country Teams 2nd at Mescalero

Carlsbad High’s cross country teams placed second at the Mescalero Apache Invitational in Mescalero on Friday, September 5. Seven schools showed up to compete in the event.

In the boys’ competition, the Ruidoso Warriors and Cavemen, each with 36 points, tied for first place. But, as the result of a tiebreaker, the Warriors were awarded the Mescalero Apache Invitational championship.

Recording Top 10 finishes for the Cavemen were Caleb Vasquez, fourth; Rex Reynolds, fifth; and Dany Hernandez, 10th.

In the girls’ division, NMMI scored 26 points to claim this year’s Invitational title. The Cavegirls were just five points behind the Broncos with 26.

Top 10 finishes for the Cavegirls were registered by Rainelle Ruiz, third; Soledad Martinez, fifth; and Alyssa Balencia, seventh.

Despite claiming runner-up spots in both divisions, CHS head coach Michael Sims said his charges had set their goals a bit higher for the invitational.

“Although we did place second in both divisions, placing second wasn’t the outcome we were hoping for,” said Sims. “After our performance at Cloudcroft last week, a first for the Cavegirls and a second for the Cavemen, we felt like we had great shots at bringing home first-place trophies in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions at Mescalero.”

“Many of our athletes executed the perfect races there. Running that well, and then placing second, was frustrating for them,” he said. “But they’re using the experience they got at Mescalero to get fired up for the UNM Invitational on Saturday, September 13. At UNM, we hope to see several of our kids post personal bests.”

Competition at UNM is scheduled to get underway at 8 a.m.
