Carlsbad High School’s Cavemen and Cavegirl tennis teams will host the Claire Higgins Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 13-14.

Contestants will compete in Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles at the tournament. Each team, boys and girls, will have two singles, two doubles, and two mixed doubles entries. In a draw, each is guaranteed four matches.

Tournament play will take place at the Pecos River Courts and at Carlsbad High. Play will begin promptly at 9 a.m. on Friday and 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Cavemen Go 3-1 at Hobbs

The CHS Tennis teams played a dual-style tournament in Hobbs on Friday and Saturday, March 6-7. Both the Cavemen and Cavegirls competed against Seminole, Lovington, Hobbs, and Artesia.

Over the two-day span, the Cavemen logged an overall record of 3-1. The Cavegirls finished at 0-4.

Top performers for the Cavemen were Lucas Bluth, No. 1 singles, Cristian Munoz, No. 5 singles, and Josh Cooper, No. 6 singles, all of whom finished out the tournament at 4-0 in singles play. Alex Burns, at No. 4, went 2-2.

Bluth also had a big showing in the doubles competition. Partnering up with Alex Burns, Steven Pham, and Sean Erosido on four different occasions for No. 1 doubles play, he was perfect at 4-0. Cristian Munoz and Josh Cooper, the Cavemen’s No. 3 doubles team, finished at 3-1.

The top performer for the Cavegirls was Sydney Azzinaro. At the No. 3 singles spot, she went 2-2.

“The kids played a lot of matches this weekend and worked very hard considering the elements they had to play in,” said CHS assistant coach Diamond Morrill. “The Cavemen had a good weekend, losing only one dual, a close 4-5 decision to Hobbs.

“Our lower ladder really stepped up and did what they needed to do to help the boys win three of their four duals,” she said. “The Cavegirls didn’t have as much luck. But they played hard, with a lot of perseverance, and never gave up. Our coaching staff was very proud of them for the effort they put out.”
