The Artesia Cross Country Invitational will take place on Friday, October 10, in Big Orange Country. Competition is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m.

It’s one of the biggest meets of the year, as far as CHS head cross country coach Michael Sims sees it. It’s a meet his Cavemen and Cavegirls have been preparing for over the past few weeks, and with good reason.

“We’ll have an opportunity to compete against two of the teams in our district, the Clovis Wildcats and Hobbs Eagles, at full strength,” said Sims. “So, this will be a great barometer for us to find out how we measure up against them at this particular time of the season.

“As of now, Roswell hasn’t entered the meet,” said the CHS coach. “Hopefully, though, they’ll be there too, so we can compete against all three of our conference competitors.”

Leading the Cavemen into Friday’s meet will be Dany Hernandez, Kleyvin Hernandez, Aiden Mendez, Rex Reynolds, Javion Scott, Kaleb Vasquez, and Josiah Waddle.

The Cavegirl roster will feature Rainelle Ruiz, Alyssa Balencia, Soledad Martinez, Oliva Long, and Jaydance Gutierrez.

Only one other meet remains on the CHS schedule before district and state. On Saturday, October 18, Carlsbad will participate in the Albuquerque Academy Extravaganza. On October 31, the District 4/5A meet will take place in Roswell, and on November 8, the state tournament will get underway in Albuquerque.

Ron Singleton Invitational Wrap-up

The Carlsbad Cavemen and Cavegirls placed third in their respective divisions at the Ron Singleton Cross Country Invitational, held in Carlsbad on Saturday, October 11.

The Clovis Wildcats swept both the boys’ and girls’ divisions. The Clovis boys, with 18 points, and girls, with 50, topped the four-team field.

Rainelle Ruiz placed third, with a time of 22:46.24, to lead the Cavegirl effort. Josiah Waddle, with a fourth-place finish and a time of 19:41.41, paced the Cavemen.

“Although we placed third, we got a lot of things done this weekend,” said CHS head coach Michael Sims. “We got to rest a lot of our varsity runners in anticipation of the Artesia Invitational on October 10, and we got to run several of our JVs at the varsity level. So, overall, it was a win-win situation for all of our kids.”
