Cavemen 2-2, Cavegirls 1-3 at Rural NM Invite

Carlsbad High’s Lucas Bluth logged an overall record of 3-1 in singles play to lead the Cavemen to a 2-2 overall record at the Rural New Mexico Tennis Invitational. The meet took place in Las Cruces on Friday and Saturday, March 20-21.

Also picking up wins in singles play for the Carlsbad boys were Sean Erosido, 2-2, Steven Pham, 2-2, Alex Burns, 2-2, and Grayson Reed, 1-3. The Cavemen competed with only five players at the Invitational.

In girls’ divisional play, the Cavegirls closed out the meet at 1-4. Only singles players Charise Young and Jena Walker were able to grab wins on the court in Las Cruces.

Both Young and Walker collected singles victories and then teamed up to claim a win in doubles play, in CHS’s 6-3 win over Mayfield. Carlsbad’s other three wins came via defaults.

Also competing in the tourney were Las Cruces Mayfield, Centennial, Farmington, and Piedra Vista.

“The Rural New Mexico Invitational used a dual-meet format. It was an important tournament for us to compete in because it allowed us an opportunity to improve our dual-meet record,” said CHS assistant coach Diamond Morrill. “A good showing would aid us later on with seedings for the state tournament.”

However, CHS had to compete without the services of several players.

“Unfortunately, we were missing many of our key players,” she said. “Also, our boys’ team had one player who was ill, so they had to compete with only five players. This led to two automatic defaults in each of their four matches.

“Despite the problems they faced, our kids battled hard,” said the CHS coach. “That’s all we could have asked of them. Our coaching staff was very proud of their efforts.”

On Friday and Saturday, March 27-28, the Cavemen and Cavegirls will compete in the Amarillo Relays.
