Cavegirls 3rd, Cavemen 4th at Wildcat Opener

Both the Cavemen and Cavegirl golf teams, teeing up at the Lovington Wildcat Invitational on March 24 in their 2026 inaugural meet, got off to good starts.

The Cavegirls, behind Cecilia Mascarenas' 88, placed third. The Cavemen, paced by Chevy Thompson's 75, placed fourth. Eleven teams, in both boys' and girls' play, competed at the invitational.

"Cecilia played really well for our first meet of the year. An 88 earned her a Top 10 finish. Overall, she placed eighth," said CHS head golf coach Brian Jones. "Averee Padilla also placed among the tourney's Top 10. She carded a 91 to finish 10th.

"All of our girls have been working really hard, so placing third in their season opener was a good showing for them," said Jones. "But our girls are capable of playing much better. After our spring break (March 28-April 5), I think they'll all be ready to roll."

Rounding out the Cavegirls' scoring cards were Haddi May, 96; Hailey Carter, 100; and Grace Thompson, 106.

Jones also liked what he saw from his boys.

"We saw a lot of really good efforts from our boys, especially from Chevy," said coach Jones. "Recording a 75—good enough for a seventh-place finish—at Lovington's country club course isn't an easy feat.

"As for our other players, they're coming along," added Jones. "I think, toward the end of our season, they'll all be peaking out and ready to make a run for a district title."

Joining Thompson en route to their fourth-place Lovington Invitational finish were Dallas Cabezuela, 86; Becker Barnes, 87; Bryce Mashaw, 87; and Robert Sanchez, 107.
