Cavegirls 2nd, Cavemen 3rd at Singleton Invite

At the Ron Singleton Track and Field Invitational on Friday, March 6, in Carlsbad, it was a great day to be a Cavegirl or Caveman. At day’s end, Carlsbad’s girls placed second and the boys third.

Overall, in girls’ competition, the top five placers were: 1. Clovis, 2. Carlsbad, 3. Alamogordo, 4. Roswell, and 5. Portales. In boys’ competition: 1. Alamogordo, 2. Clovis, 3. Carlsbad, 4. Lovington and 5. Roswell.

“Our girls competed surprisingly well. Atria Wells, as expected, dominated the shot put and discus, and Cassie Bielstein the triple and long jumps. Her leap of 34’ 03’ in the long jump also qualified her for state,” said CHS head coach Charles Millar. “Rainelle Ruiz also turned in a great performance. She dominated the 1600m run.”

And just how impressive was Wells en route to picking up gold medals in both the shot put and discus, and Bielstein, en route to claiming gold in both the long and triple Jumps?

“We have been so blessed to have Cassie and Atria for the past few seasons. They’ve both dominated their field events and have accumulated many of the points on the girls’ side,” said Millar. “We’re no stranger to them doing well, but winning four events, two each, is pretty incredible! Especially at the 5A level.”

But Wells, Bielstein, and Ruiz weren’t the only CHS harriers to be cited for their efforts at the Singleton Invitational.

“Our boys also competed well. While placing first in the high jump, Jonah Moyers was able to match his 2025 state championship height of 6’6,” said the CHS coach. “And Marley Munoz, also competing in the high jump, leaped 6’0” to qualify for state.

“On the track, our boys’ medley relay team (Trey Barta, Lennon Ananins, Bailey King, and Javion Scott) ran well,” said Millar. “Our 4x200 relay team (Jaden Harper, Lennon Ananins, Eaven Leos, and Damian Valencia) and our 4x400 relay squad (Rex Reynolds, Bryan King, Jonah Moyers, and Bailey King) also ran well. Both teams logged improved times.”

CHS hosted the Eddy County Qualifier on Thursday, March 12. (Results of the meet will be posted in the March 20 edition of the Carlsbad Local) On Friday, March 20, the CHS track teams will compete in the Rolla Buck Invitational in Alamogordo. The meet is scheduled to get underway at noon.
