By Sarah Jones, Library Director, Carlsbad Public Library

Just a short walk from the library sits one of Carlsbad’s most unique and creative outdoor spaces—Halagueno Arts Park. While many people enjoy visiting the park to see the sculptures, murals, and performances, fewer may know the story of how this vibrant space came to life.

The park began as a vision to transform an empty and underused lot into a place where art, culture, and community could come together. Local leaders, artists, and volunteers recognized that public spaces have the power to inspire creativity and bring people together. Rather than leaving the area unused, the idea emerged to create a park dedicated to the arts—something that would celebrate the creativity of the region while providing a gathering place for residents and visitors alike.

Bringing that vision to life took collaboration. Community members, artists, and city partners worked together to imagine what the park could become. The goal was not just to build a park, but to create a living art space—one that would continue to evolve and grow as new artists and ideas emerged.

Today, Halagueno Arts Park features a wide range of artistic elements. Visitors can stroll through the park and discover sculptures, murals, and other installations created by talented artists. Many of these works reflect the culture, landscapes, and stories of southeastern New Mexico. Each piece adds something unique to the park and helps turn a simple outdoor space into an open-air gallery.

But the park is more than just a place to view art; it is also a place where art happens. Over the years, Halagueno Arts Park has hosted performances, festivals, community gatherings, and creative events that bring people together. From music and theater to art walks and seasonal celebrations, the park has become a hub for local creativity.

Spaces like Halagueno Arts Park play an important role in communities. Public art makes creativity accessible to everyone. You do not need a ticket or special invitation to enjoy it—you simply show up, walk through the space, and experience it. It invites people of all ages to pause, look closely, and see something new.

The park also reflects something important about Carlsbad itself: a strong sense of community pride and collaboration. Projects like this do not happen without people who are willing to imagine new possibilities and work together to make them real.

Libraries and arts spaces often share a similar mission. Both are places where ideas, creativity, and learning are encouraged. Just as the library provides access to books, information, and programs, the arts park provides access to visual art, performance, and shared cultural experiences.

If you have not visited Halagueno Arts Park recently, consider taking a walk through it sometime soon. Spend a few minutes looking at the sculptures,

reading the plaques, or simply enjoying the space. You may discover something new each time you visit.

And like any great community space, its story continues to grow—shaped by the artists, performers, and residents who bring it to life.
