The Santa Teresa Desert Warriors spoiled the Carlsbad Cavemen soccer team’s 2026 season opener in Santa Teresa on Monday, August 17.

The Warriors, 18-4 in 2025, scored one goal in the first half and two more in the second to close out CHS’s hopes for a victory, 3-0. (MaxPreps stats)

However, first-year head coach Aaron Babcock, who inherited a team that posted a 3-15 record in 2025, remained optimistic about the future of his charges.

“It was a better game than the score indicated,” said Babcock. “Santa Teresa just had a lot more experience, and it showed.

“Even with the loss, our kids did a lot of very positive things on the field,” he said, “things we can take to practice with us this week as we get ready for Mayfield and Centennial.”

The Cavemen will host the Mayfield Trojans on Friday, August 21, and the Centennial Hawks on Saturday, August 22.

Both Mayfield and Centennial look to be tough matches for the Cavemen.

During 2025, the Trojans, ranked 15th by MaxPreps at season’s end, closed out the year with a 15-5-1 record. They officially opened 2026 on Wednesday, August. 19, against the Cleveland Storm. (Score unavailable by CLS deadline)

Centennial placed 12th in MaxPreps’ final season poll during 2025. They were 14-6-2 on the year.

When the Hawks take the field on Saturday, they’ll already have played two games this season.

On Tuesday, August 18, they took on the Cleveland Storm, and on Thursday, August 20, the Deming Wildcats. (Scores unavailable by CLS deadline)

Game times for Carlsbad’s clash with Mayfield on Friday are set for 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Play vs. Centennial is scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. and noon. The JVs will take the field first, followed by the varsity in both contests.
