SENMC Workforce Development Graduates RadiologicalControl Technician Class

The SENMC Workforce Development Department in partnership with Porter House Inc. graduated its first Radiological Control Technician Class on Friday, July 11. The RCT School is a 16 weeks (320 hours) program based on the U.S. Department of Energy and the Commercial Nuclear Power entry level requirements for Radiological Control Technicians and Radiological Protection Technicians. The curriculum consists of classroom instructions by Porter House Inc. staff who have over 75 years of combined experience in the Nuclear Navy, Commercial Nuclear Power, and U.S. Department of Energy programs. Following the classroom phase, the training participants spend approximately 100 hours in hands-on activities using industry equipment and simulators to apply the knowledge obtained in the classroom. Graduates of the program are trained, confident and ready to pursue employment at facilities like the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, Sandia National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, other DOE sites and Commercial Nuclear Power sites.

As the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) continues its mission to safely manage transuranic waste, the demand for highly trained RCTs is growing rapidly. Southeast New Mexico College (SENMC), in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy, is actively expanding its training programs to meet this and related needs ensuring that local residents have access to high-paying, high-impact careers that directly support the safety and sustainability of WIPP operations and the nuclear industry. Investing in RCT training not only strengthens Carlsbad’s workforce but also reinforces the region’s leadership in nuclear waste management and national security.”
