New Mexico Tow & Recovery Association (NMTRA) has voted unanimously to join the New Mexico Automotive Industry Alliance (NMAIA), creating a more unified and powerful voice for automotive professionals across the state. The historic vote took place during the NMTRA’s meeting last Saturday, marking a significant milestone for both organizations.

This strategic alliance aims to better address the unique challenges facing the towing and recovery sector while strengthening advocacy efforts for the entire automotive industry in New Mexico.

“This decision to join NMAIA is a milestone for towing professionals across our state,” said Amy Barela, President of NMTRA. “For too long, the towing industry has operated with limited resources and recognition despite being a critical component of roadway safety and vehicle services. NMTRA members are thrilled to begin working closely, in partnership with NMAIA, with local law enforcement, the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT), and communities throughout the state. By fostering strong partnerships, we aim to ensure the safety of the towing industry, highways, and streets. We understand the critical importance of keeping our roads open and prioritize prompt and efficient response when accidents occur to minimize disruptions and enhance public safety.

As part of the agreement, Barela will join the NMAIA Board of Directors and will chair the newly formed Towing & Recovery Committee, ensuring strong representation and focused leadership for towing industry concerns within the expanded organization.

“We’re thrilled to welcome the towing and recovery professionals into our association,” said Marc Powell, Executive Director of NMAIA. “This alliance acknowledges the essential role that towing services play in the automotive ecosystem. By bringing Amy onto our Board and establishing a dedicated Towing & Recovery Committee under her leadership, we’re ensuring that the specific needs of this vital industry sector receive the attention and resources they deserve. Together, we can provide more comprehensive representation across all automotive sectors, offer enhanced member benefits, and speak with a stronger, unified voice on legislative and regulatory matters that affect our industry.”

The integration will take place over the coming months, with full operational unification expected to be complete by summer 2025. NMTRA members will immediately gain access to NMAIA benefits, including expanded insurance options, educational resources, and legislative advocacy.

Key priorities for the expanded organization include:

• Advocating for improved safety regulations and protections for roadside assistance workers

• Developing specialized training and certification programs for towing professionals

• Creating a more cohesive approach to industry standards and best practices

• Strengthening relationships with insurance companies, law enforcement, and emergency services

• Providing enhanced member benefits and business development resources

This alliance comes at a time when automotive services face increasing challenges from technological changes, regulatory pressures, and workforce development issues. By combining their strengths, the organizations aim to better position all automotive professionals to thrive in a rapidly evolving industry landscape.
