A local couple has been dreaming of opening a brewery in Carlsbad for quite a while. After much thought, creativity, and effort, Nurvis Purvis Brewing Co. opened just before the Fourth of July at 1602 N. Canal St.

With a fun, vibrant atmosphere and an outdoor patio for the community to enjoy, the new brewery also supports other businesses throughout New Mexico.

The duo behind this creation is Drew and Sarah Purvis. “I was born and raised here,” said Sarah, sharing that her maiden name is Gonzales. “My husband, Drew, he was actually born in Canada. His parents came here for work. He’s been here since he was seven, so he grew up here as well,” she said.

“We both left at some point in our lives, and then found our way back here again,” said Sarah.

Sharing their inspiration, she said, “Every time, he and I, we would go out of town, we would always go to a brewery or a beer garden or some sort of a speakeasy, or something like that. It was always just, like, great vibes when you go; everybody’s always really friendly.

“We also love Lucas at Milton’s and Trevor, he’s the head brewer at Guadalupe. It’s like we’re trying to support everybody at the same time,” said Sarah, explaining that Nurvis Purvis has beer on tap from the other local breweries. “Right now, we’re not brewing any of our own just yet, because we’re poor,” she laughed.

“We’re trying to, like, generate some income and put it back into setting up all of our equipment to actually manufacture our own,” said Sarah. “In the meantime, we’re selling everything New Mexico; we have some from Ruidoso, Albuquerque, Carlsbad, wine from New Mexico, and then liquor as well from throughout the state. Everything is made in New Mexico,” she said.

“I do marketing and graphic design, so when I first had the idea, I came up with the logo and the brand, and the website,” said Sarah. “That was in 2023.”

The property was leased from Trent and Kacey Cornum in 2024. “It’s Monument Rentals and Truline Construction,” said Sarah. “Our landlord owns construction companies, so we hired him to do all of the construction work. It was great,” she said.

“We had Shane Bostick do our architectural design, so he helped a lot with, like, the interior stuff, and then my husband and I did all of the décor,” said Sarah.

“We built the patio—that was hard work. It was like the worst day of the year because it was raining, and then it snowed, and then it was windy, like all-in-one day. It was crazy, but it was amazing. We couldn’t have done it without Drew’s parents. They helped a lot with the hard labor,” she said.

“Carrot Top is the permanent food truck on the property,” said Sarah. “Occasionally, when we have large events or super busy nights, we’ll have guest vendors—like guest food trucks.”

The brewery is open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from noon to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sarah said the hours are subject to change, but they don’t want to adjust them too much once people get used to it.

Sarah said there are several things she’s looking forward to. First, is the customer/clientele. “We already have a few regulars that come in every day/every other day, which is really nice to get to know them on a personal level. The second thing is the back of the house, the brew house part of it,” she said.

“All the other breweries in New Mexico, most of them are very welcoming. We’re part of the New Mexico Brewers Guild,” said Sarah. She said that Guadalupe and Milton, who are here in town, have been very forthcoming in offering them help and assistance, and she appreciates the support.

“That’s what I’m so excited for; it’s like we’re already building, like, a community with other breweries. It’s like a little family,” Sarah said.
