Lions Find Limousine Workaround

Carlsbad Heights Lions build wheelchair ramps, thanks to skilled carpenters like Tom Dugger and Richard Sillas. Also capable are Bill Deringer, Jay Francis, Chad Boadway, non-Lions Ken Britt and Khushroo Ghadiali, and avid assistants Mary Sillas and Michael Bromka. At a corner of W. Fox and S. Mesquite streets, they gathered to build their ramp—only to find a limousine blocking the way. What now?

Tom and Richard had prebuilt 2”X4” units the day before, assisted by Bill, Jay, and Michael. Their design presumed the ramp would use limited yard space efficiently to descend westward, U-turn on a landing, then descend eastward to the ground. But obstructing the turnaround was a white stretch limo. Reached by phone, its driver was out of state and hours away.

However, to Tom and Richard, onsite redesigns present a fun challenge. The small yard allowed repurposing their prebuilt units to descend farther westward, with a short L-turn south.

The only telltale oddity was a slight west-facing “balcony” too low for Romeo’s Juliet but perfect for DiCaprio’s Jack Dawson to shout, “I’m King of the World!”

Limo averted—with no icebergs likely—freewheeling residents now can “disembark” safely..
