Matt and Jessica Campbell, who were raised in Carlsbad, have been married for 11 years. They own and operate MKC Construction, which specializes in residential and commercial remodeling and repair, and work together as a husband-and-wife team.

Jessica has been working full-time in the construction business for the last five years, while Matt grew up doing construction work. Matt said prior to opening MKC Construction, he worked for Randy Bock Construction. “That’s my dad,” he said.

MKC Construction does residential and commercial remodels, according to Matt. “Eighty percent of our business is residential,” he said. Kitchen remodels, bathroom remodels, flooring, painting, drywall, and replacing front and interior doors are examples of the work Matt and Jessica mentioned that they do. “We’ve done a couple of whole-house remodels,” said Matt.

For tasks they do not perform, such as installing carpet, roofing, stucco, concrete, additions, and new construction, they provide referrals, they said.

Matt and Jessica have three daughters, Mattie, Abby, and Hannah, who have all worked in the business. “We tried to get them interested,” said Jessica.

“They don’t love it,” said Matt. Two work as instructional assistants at the schools, with the other working as a waitress in a local restaurant, he said.

Matt said he most enjoys building friendships and relationships with people and being presented with opportunities to help people who are struggling and need a hand-up. “It’s like there’s nothing that says we have to charge this amount of money every time,” he said.

“We do a lot of work for widows,” said Jessica.

“We’re both Christians, and the Bible talks about helping out the widows and the orphans,” said Matt, explaining that they use their skills as a ministry from time to time.

“We have noticed in the nine years since I’ve been doing this, God has brought a lot of widows into relationships with us that we’ve done a lot of work for,” said Matt, adding that these are women whose husbands died relatively young.

Jessica said she most enjoys using her skills to improve people’s lives by doing things they cannot do for themselves and working with those who are struggling. “It’s really good to see things that haven’t been functional come back to use,” she said.

“It’s cool to see things improved,” said Jessica. “It’s really neat to see how you can really change someone’s life by giving them a house that they can use,” she said.

Matt told a story about some of their friends who started remodeling their bathroom. “He started and then got in over his head. It sat with nothing but studs in it for five years,” he said.

Matt said he and Jessica offered to remodel the bathroom. “We gave them a deeply discounted price. There are six of them—they have four kids—and to see how much improvement there has been from going from all six sharing one bathroom to now six with two bathrooms, it has made a world of difference,” he said.

While they obviously cannot discount every job without going broke, Matt said, “We’ve been given opportunities where we can give back because we have been richly blessed.”

The company stays busy, Jessica said, “The nice thing is you can stay as busy as you want to. If we want to take a vacation, because we work for ourselves, we can just not schedule anything.”

Matt said the business started in 2016, and Jessica joined him in 2020 during the COVID pandemic. “She was a pediatric nurse practitioner, and they gave her 30 days off with no pay,” Matt said.

This was during the time when they closed all the clinics, said Jessica. “It was supposed to be temporary. They called me on day 29 and said, ‘Hey, you don’t have a job anymore,’” she said.

“They got rid of my job, so I told him, I work with you now,” said Jessica.

“God moved me to this, and this is where He wants me. When I first started doing this, I prayed a lot,” said Jessica. She said she asked if she should return to her career as a nurse practitioner because she had worked really hard to achieve it. “He has not told me to do that,” she said.

“This has been great. We really enjoy being together and working together. He takes care of things I don’t like to do,” said Jessica.

“I do the business side, and she does the work side. It works great for us,” Matt said.

“If you need work done, feel free to call us,” said Matt. They can be reached at 575-200-6576. To view their work, visit the MKC Construction Facebook page.
