When people think of the library, they often think of books—and while free access to books is a major benefit, it’s only the beginning.

Recently, a local journalist stopped by the library to cover an event and mentioned that it was their first time ever setting foot in the building. During our conversation, they shared that they love to read but typically purchase all of their books. That moment sparked this column because it highlighted a common misconception about what the library offers. A library card is more than just access to shelves of books—it’s a powerful tool for saving money in ways many people don’t realize.

The most obvious savings come from borrowing books instead of buying them. Hardcover books, audiobooks, and eBooks can cost anywhere from $15 to $30 each, and avid readers can easily spend hundreds of dollars a year. With a library card, you can check out bestselling novels, nonfiction titles, large print books, audiobooks, and digital materials at no cost. We also offer access to magazines and newspapers online, eliminating the need for multiple subscriptions and physical copies in our collection.

Beyond reading materials, we provide free access to technology that can be expensive to maintain at home. Public computers, Wi-Fi, printing, scanning, and copying services are available at little to no cost. For students, job seekers, and small business owners, these services can save significant money while supporting education and career goals.

We also offer free access to online learning platforms, language courses, test prep materials, and research databases that would otherwise require paid subscriptions.

Libraries are also hubs for free programs and events. From children’s storytimes and craft programs to adult workshops, author talks, and educational classes, these activities provide entertainment and enrichment without admission fees. Families, in particular, can save money by attending library programs instead of paying for classes, camps, or activities elsewhere. Summer reading programs include incentives and prizes, making learning both fun and affordable.

Another major cost-saving benefit is access to community resources. We provide help with job applications, résumé building, and interview preparation—services that can cost hundreds of dollars through private agencies.

We even have a free meeting room for community groups and nonprofits, reducing the need to rent space. We lend out nontraditional items such as puzzles, games, technology, or hobby equipment, allowing patrons to try something new without purchasing it.

The library also helps patrons make informed financial decisions. Many collections include books and resources on budgeting, investing, home repair, health, and consumer education. Knowledge is power, and having free access to reliable information can help individuals and families avoid costly mistakes.

In short, the library is more than a place to borrow books—it’s a place to stretch your budget, expand your skills, and enrich your life without added expense. Whether you’re cutting costs, learning something new, or simply enjoying free entertainment, your library is working every day to help you save money.

If you haven’t used your library card recently, now is the perfect time to rediscover just how much it can offer. If you do not have a library card, we encourage you to get signed up. It is free and only takes a few minutes. We need a current photo ID and proof of current mailing address.
