Football teams in District 3/6A went just over .500 during the opening week of prep gridiron play. The conference saw four of its members logging wins, while three fell short of their season inaugural dreams.

Picking up those four wins were the Las Cruces Bulldawgs, the Hobbs Eagles, the Alamogordo Tigers, and the Clovis Wildcats. The Dawgs downed Mayfield Trojans 61-6, the Eagles cruised past the Lovington Wildcats 41-13, the Alamogordo Tigers topped the Deming Wildcats 29-16, and the Clovis Wildcats toppled the Farmington Scorpions 32-27.

Absorbing losses were the Organ Mountain Knights, Centennial Hawks, and our own Carlsbad Cavemen. The Knights fell to the Eldorado Golden Eagles 56-28, the Hawks to the Cleveland Storm 55-42, and the Cavemen to the Artesia Bulldogs 48-24.

One might want to put an asterisk next to the Centennial Hawks and Cavemen losses. Centennial took on the Class 6A top-ranked Cleveland Storm, while the Cavemen battled the Class 5A top-ranked Artesia Bulldogs.

Carlsbad and Centennial's degree of difficulty, lining up against Artesia and Cleveland, were the toughest season-opening assignments in the state.

As a result of last week's games, MaxPreps has ranked its Class 6A Top Ten for the week of August 25-30. Just for good measure, we'll add all District 6A teams' rankings.

They are as follows: 1. Cleveland 1-0, 2. Las Cruces 1-0, 3. Volcano Vista 1-0, 4. La Cueva 0-1, 5. Centennial 0-1, 6. Hobbs 1-0, 7. Rio Rancho 1-0, 8. Los Lunas 0-1, 9. Piedra Vista 0-1, 10. Clovis 1-0; 13. Carlsbad 0-1, 15. Alamogordo 1-0, and 19. Organ Mt. 0-1.

As for the Cavemen, having played only one game so far, everything they've worked for during their off-season and summer workouts is still ahead of them and very attainable. Go Cavemen!

Key Word for CHS Sports

If there is a keyword for CHS sports this season, it just might be patience. Last week, August 19-23, only the Cavegirl soccer team was able to register a win.

Only the CHS cross country teams sat out last week. They'll be opening up the new prep season on Friday afternoon, Aug. 29, in Cloudcroft.

Cavemen and Cavegirl fans need to keep in mind that several of CHS's teams are very young this year.

Although getting roughed up a bit last week, CHS did see three of its athletes enjoy pretty good openers.

In the Cavegirls' 3-0 win over Lovington, senior Hayden Brose booted in all three goals for Carlsbad. In the Cavemen's 48-24 loss to Artesia, junior running back Brock Wright rushed for 130 yards on just 21 carries. In the Cavemen soccer team's 6-1 loss to Mayfield and 5-1 loss to Centennial, junior Edwin Minjares scored goals against both teams.

            Go CHS!
