Caveman Gavin Otto, perfect at 4-0, grabbed a singles championship title at the recent Longhorn Tennis Invitational held in Amarillo, TX, on Friday and Saturday, February 28-March 1.

“Gavin played extremely well in Amarillo. He was consistent, and he played smart,” said CHS assistant coach Diamond Morrill. “His strokes were very good, he kept the ball in play, and he let his opponents take chances and make mistakes.”

Charise (Reese) Young turned in the Cavegirls’ top performance at the Amarillo meet. Young went 2-2 to place fourth.

“Charise started off strong. Making some great shots, she moved her opponents around the court really well. She made them work really hard,” said Morrill. “However, although she played well throughout the tournament, she couldn’t keep pace with her opponent during her third-place match. As a result, she finished fourth. But she battled hard, and we couldn’t have been more proud of her effort.”

At the Longhorn Invite, participants could compete in singles or doubles, not both.

“We looked at this as a great opportunity to get our kids some more valuable experience,” said the CHS coach. “So, we put kids in events that we felt would benefit them the most.

“Overall, we were pleased with the efforts we saw from all of our kids. The tournament was very competitive, and they learned a lot,” added Morrill. “As our coaching staff sees it, the season is still very young, and as long as we continue to work hard and compete, as we did in Amarillo, our kids are only going to get better.”

On Friday and Saturday, March 7-8, the CHS tennis teams will hit the road once again, this time to compete in the Hobbs Eagle Invitational.
