Carlsbad High School’s Cavemen and Cavegirl golf teams will tee off the 2025 links season on Tuesday, April 1, at the Roswell Coyote Invitational. The meet will take place at the Alien City’s NMMI course, with play set to get underway at 9 a.m.

Expectations for both the Cavegirls and Cavemen are high this year. Last year, the Cavegirls captured the District 4/5A championship and went on to place fifth at the state tournament. The Cavemen closed out 2024 as the conference runner-up.

However, even better news than that for CHS head coach Bryan Jones is that both the Cavemen and Cavegirls graduated just one linkster off each team.

“Having brought almost everybody back from last year’s run, we’ve set some pretty high expectations for both teams this season. In girls’ play, we expect to repeat as District 4/5A champions,” said Jones. “On the boy’s side, although Hobbs will more than likely be the pre-season favorite, we expect to compete with them for this year’s district title. We also expect both teams to make it to state this year.”

How the Varsities Lineup

Currently leading the way for the Cavegirl varsity team are Lindsey Carter and Hailey Carter. Also teeing up for the varsity squad will be Haddi May and Averee Padilla.

Both Lindsey Carter and May earned All-District honors at last year’s District 4/5A meet. Carter fired an 87 to finish third. May carded an 89 to place fourth.

Anchoring the top two spots for the Cavemen are Chevy Thompson and Brayden Raney. Thompson, a junior, carded an 81 at last year’s District 4/5A meet to finish fifth and earn All-District honors.

Rounding out the Cavemen’s varsity roster are Robbie Rodriguez, Jace Hernandez, and Bubba Anderson.

“We’re still a few days away from our opener. So, as our varsity slots are very competitive, our lineups could change,” said Jones. “Also, with only four girls on our Cavegirls’ squad, we still have an open slot to fill. However, other than our top four, all of our other players are pretty young and inexperienced. Hopefully, though, we’ll be able to fill that slot before long.”

Varsity squads may contain as many as five golfers. But only a team’s top four cards determine tournament scores.

Following their season opener in Roswell, the CHS golf teams will compete at the Artesia Varsity Invitational on Monday, April 7. The meet will take place at the Artesia Country Club, with tee-offs set to begin at 9 a.m.

Looking down the road, the 2025 district tournament will take place here in Carlsbad at the Riverside Country Club on May 6.

“We’re all looking forward to hosting this year’s district meet. Playing at home, in front of our fans, will be special.,” said Jones. “But that’s a long way down the road. In the meantime, we’ll be working hard each week to make sure we’re ready for it.”
