Lady luck eluded the 16-7 Carlsbad Cavemen on Tuesday night, February 10, in a game that saw the 12-10 Clovis Wildcats slip past Carlsbad High 51-45. The clash took place in Clovis.

“It was a tough game and tough environment, but we played even with the Wildcats throughout the game. With about 2:30 left on the clock, the score was all tied up,” said Cavemen head coach John Zumbrun. “But, down the stretch, Clovis was able to pull away.”

Maliq Mills, with 12 points, and Zenas Huerta, with 10, led all Carlsbad scorers. The loss dropped Carlsbad to 3-1 in conference play alongside Hobbs, also 3-1.

Despite the loss, should CHS defeat the Roswell Coyotes in the Cavern City on Friday night, February 13, and the Hobbs Eagles on Friday night, February 20, in Hobbs, the 2025-26 District 4/5A title will belong to the Cavemen.

Currently, Hobbs is ranked seventh in Class 5A basketball, while the Cavemen are ranked 10th.

Friday night’s clash with Roswell will be CHS’s final regular-season home game of the year. The Cavemen defeated the Coyotes 64-51 in Roswell on January 30.

Tipoff for the encounter is set for 7 p.m. The JVs will open the night’s action at 5:30 p.m.

Cavemen Comeback Topples Hobbs

Year in and year out, winning a District 4/5A title means going through the Hobbs Eagles.

On Friday night, February 6, in Carlsbad, the Cavemen did just that, upending perennial power Hobbs 52-46 in overtime.

In a game of two distinct halves, the Cavemen outpointed the Eagles 29-21 during the first two quarters of play, only to watch Hobbs rally over the final two, 21-13, to knot the game up at 42-42 as time ran out in regulation.

However, Carlsbad took advantage of the overtime period to outscore the Birds 10-4 en route to the win.

The Cavemen’s effort earned them a 52-46 victory and sole possession of first place in this year’s race for the District 4/5A title.

Double-digit scorers, Shane Sullivan with 17 and Zenas Huerta with 15, paced the Cavemen’s offensive attack. Sanyika Green, with eight rebounds, led all Cavemen efforts on the boards.

A hot night at the free-throw line played a key role in CHS’s victory. On the night, they hit 13 of 16 attempts, an average of 81.3 percent.
