Following a 51-36 loss to the Artesia Bulldogs on January 6 in Artesia, the Cavemen basketball team is probably in a hurry to get back on the floor.

The loss snapped CHS’s eight-game winning streak.

The good news is they won’t have to wait long. On Friday night, January 9, the Organ Mt. Knights will be in town to test CHS’s resolve, and on Saturday, January 10, the Mayfield Trojans will make their way into the Cavemen Arena.

Currently, the Cavemen are 8-4 on the year. In Class 5A basketball, they’re ranked 10th. Organ Mt. has compiled a 7-6 record and will enter Friday night’s game ranked 13th. The Mayfield Trojans, 9-3 overall, are ranked 12th.

The Cavemen vs. Organ Mt. matchup will get underway with C-Team action at 4 p.m. on Friday, followed by the JVs at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, vs. Mayfield, the C-Team will take the floor at 11 a.m., the JVs at 12:30 p.m., and the varsity at 2 p.m.

Cavemen Roundup

Cavemen 74, St. Mike’s 46. The St. Michaels Horsemen proved to be no match for the Carlsbad Cavemen in a game played in Portales on Friday, January 2. The Cavemen, riding the hot hands of Dryden Preece, 18 points; Zenas Huerta, 18 points; Shane Sullivan, 13 points; and Kevin Quarles, 11 points, corralled the Horsemen 74-46.

The Cavemen, in streaking to their eighth straight win, hit 50% of their two-point attempts (19-38), 40% of their three-point shots (8-20), and 75% of their free throws (12-16).

Cavemen 36, Artesia 51. The Cavemen, riding an eight-game winning streak, watched it all come down in a 51-36 loss to the Artesia Bulldogs on Tuesday night, January 6, in Artesia.

Although battling the Dogs to a 22-22 half-time stalemate, CHS couldn’t keep pace with Artesia during the second half, especially during the third quarter when they were outpointed 15-2 by the Dogs. Outscored 29-14 over the final two periods, the Cavemen succumbed to the Dogs 51-36.

No doubt cold shooting outside the arc played a role in CHS’s downfall. Although hitting 44% of their two-point attempts (11-25), they managed to connect on just 23.5% of their threes (4-17).

Leading scorers for the Cavemen were Shane Sullivan with 15 points and Dryden Preece with 8.
