In the second of three District 4/5A dual tennis meets, the Carlsbad Cavemen rolled over the Roswell Coyotes, as did the Cavegirls, 9-0. The meet took place in the Cavern City on Friday, April 17.

“High winds made play difficult,” said CHS assistant coach Diamond Morrill. “But our kids battled both the Roswell Coyotes and elements well.”

Lucas Bluth ran into little resistance from his opponent. The senior, and Cavemen’s No. 1 singles player, was perfect in posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory over his Coyote foe.

Also recording 6-0, 6-0 wins were Sean Erosido, No. 2 singles, and Alex Burns, No. 4 singles.

Having also defeated the Clovis Wildcats 8-1 in their conference opener, the Cavemen stand 2-0 in District 4/5A play.

The Cavegirls, who dropped their district inaugural to Clovis 0-9, fared much better against the Otes. The win upped their conference mark to 1-1.

“After being saddled with a loss from the Wildcats in their conference opener, our girls were determined to get a win against Roswell,” said Morrill. “Definitely fired up, they did just that.”

Leading the Cavegirls to the 9-0 win were their No. 1 singles player Myka Char, No. 2 girl Charise Young, and No. 3 player Regina Reyes. All three girls registered 6-0, 6-0 victories.

“We got great efforts from Myka, Charise, and Regina. None of them lost a set; they played great!” said the CHS coach. “That’s especially true for Myka, who has stepped up into the role of our number one. She has been working hard to achieve the necessary consistency for that spot.

“But we were so proud of all of our girls,” said Morrill. “They looked like a much-improved team against Roswell.”

On Thursday, April 23, both the Cavegirls and Cavemen battled the Hobbs Eagles in Hobbs. A lot was riding on the outcome of the match for CHS.

A victory by the Cavemen would earn them not only a District 4/5A title but also an automatic spot in this year’s state tournament. A win for the Cavegirls would give them a second-place finish in the conference.

Only conference champions get automatic bids. Runners-up, as with everybody else, must rely on records or a wild card invitation to get to the Big Dance in Albuquerque.

As of Wednesday, April 22, the Cavemen were 9-3 on the year, the Cavegirls 3-9.

On Friday, May 1, Carlsbad Local Sports will post the results of the CHS vs. Hobbs clash.

On Friday, May 1, in Clovis, CHS will compete in the District 4/5A tournament. The tournament hosts individual play only, with the top three finishers in singles and doubles play advancing on to state.
