Cavemen, in a Heartbreaker, Place 2nd

By Don Eskins

The Cavegirls, riding Haddi May’s 85 and Lindsey Carter’s 87, posted a team low score of 366 to capture the 2025 District 4/5A Golf Championship in the Cavern City on Tuesday, May 6, at the Riverside Country Club Golf Course. The victory made it back-to-back titles for the Carlsbad girls.

Also contributing to the Cavegirl effort were Hailey Carter, 94; Averee Padilla, 100; Cecilia Mascarenas, 102; and Grace Thompson, 117.

CHS, en route to the tourney title, outdistanced the runner-up Roswell Coyotes (who came in at 376) by 10 strokes. Clovis, at 377, placed third, and Hobbs, with a 378, finished fourth.

Grabbing All-District Honors for their play were Haddi May and Lindsey Carter. May, who carded an 85, placed second in the tournament. Lindsey, who posted an 87, finished fifth.

The top five placers at the D4/5A tournament earned All-District honors.

“I’m so proud of these young ladies. They fought really hard and kept things together as they moved along the course to get the win,” said an elated CHS head coach Bryan Jones.

“Winning a district title is always nice,” added the CHS coach. “But it’s even better when it’s back-to-back, something that’s very difficult to do.”

Cavemen Come Up Short

For the Cavemen, the 2025 District 4/5A tournament proved to be a heartbreaker.

Down by 11 strokes, with only 10 holes left to play, Carlsbad’s boys battled back to grab a share of the conference title with the Hobbs Eagles. Both schools closed out the tourney with identical 333 team scores. Due to the tie, a playoff was necessary to determine this year’s district champion.

Unfortunately for the Cavemen, the Eagles claimed the conference title on the first hole of the playoff.

But, despite finishing second, the Cavemen’s effort didn’t go unrecognized.

“A lot of teams would have folded, being 11 strokes back, at any point of a match,” said coach Jones. “But our boys didn’t back off at all. They went to work. Not many teams could have pulled off what they did. Our staff couldn’t have been more proud of them.”

Leading the way for the Cavemen were Chevy Thompson and Robbie Rodriguez, who both carded 81s. Rounding out CHS’s scorecard were Anthony Hernandez, with an 85, and Jeremiah Raney and Rev Valenzuela, who posted 86s.

Chevy Thompson and Robbie Rodriguez finished the tournament in a tie for second place. As a result of their top-five finish, both received All-District Honors.

The Clovis Wildcats posted a 351 to place third at the conference meet. The Roswell Coyotes, with a 357, finished fourth.

On to State

As district champions, the Cavegirls automatically advance to the state tournament. The event, scheduled for May 12-13, will take place at the San Juan Country Club in Farmington.

Despite their great effort at district, no Cavemen qualified to compete in this year’s Big Dance.
