A CHS Swim Team Report

Battling the flu, the Carlsbad High School Swim Team was down six swimmers as they prepared to compete at the Artesia Invitational on Saturday, January 18.

But, despite the holes in their roster, the Cavegirls took fourth place with 36 points, while the Cavemen took fifth with 58 points. CHS entered the meet, which hosted a nine-team field, with just 14 swimmers.

The biggest story of the day was the significant time cuts for several Carlsbad swimmers. Some notable swims from the Cavegirls include a 9.80 second time drop for sophomore Julia Comer in the Girls’ 200 Yard IM. Comer finished in seventh place with a 2:43.60. Seeing a 4.45 second time drop was freshman Tiny Martinez in the Girls’ 100 Yard Butterfly. Martinez placed eighth with a 1:15.08. And freshman Taitum Lindsey saw a 9.46 second time drop in the Girls’ 500 Yard Freestyle. Lindsey finished in sixth place with a 6:04.61.

Not to be outmatched, the Cavemen also saw some significant time drops. Notable swims for the boys’ team include an impressive 11.37 second time drop for sophomore Kason Longbine in the Boys’ 200 Yard IM. Longbine placed fourth with a 2:24.72. Freshman Rex Reynolds came up with a 4.31 second time drop in the Boys’ 200 Yard IM, finishing third with a 2:22.57. A 3.32 second time drop for eighth-grader Manuel Baldemar in the Boys’ 50 Yard Freestyle had him placing 30th with a 35.83, and a 2.70 second time drop for senior Moses Mendoza in the Boys’ 100 Yard Butterfly took him to 10th with a 1:18.59. Kason Longbine garnered a 2.54 second time drop in the Boys’ 100 Yard Freestyle and placed 10th with a 57.45, while Manuel Baldemar came up with a 4.60 second time drop in the Boys’ 100 Yard Freestyle. He finished 25th with a 1:24.03.

The team will travel to Santa Fe to compete in the Griffin Invitational on Friday and Saturday, January 24-25. This will be a two-day prelim/finals format swim meet at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center. The CHS Swim Team coaches are hopeful the team will be healthy and at full strength.
