The Business Professionals of America chapter of Carlsbad High School had a top-notch performance recently at the National Leadership Conference in Orlando. Thirty-four students competed, and six placed in the top 10 in the nation of their respective events.

These students are: senior Christina Bicol, ninth out of 49 in Entrepreneurship; junior Lilayna Moho, ninth out of 76 in Health Administration Procedures; junior Jack Dodd, eighth out of 46 in Economic Research; sophomore Miles Stephens, sixth out of 44 in Extemporaneous Speech; junior Yuki Ye, sixth out of 64 in Legal Office Procedures; and senior Sawyer Johnston, fourth out of 44 in Human Resource Management.

Other students receiving recognition at the National Leadership Conference were the 11 students who earned an Ambassador Torch Award. The BPA Torch program is designed to promote professionalism and leadership; the Ambassador award is the highest award in the Torch program. Those receiving the Ambassador award were Christina Bicol, Hailey Digby, Sawyer Johnston, Kanyon Kitchens, Bryce Mashaw, J.D. McCormack, Ashtyn Olivas, Marienne Parsons, Mason Region, Aniah Sepulveda, and Miles Stephens.

The CHS chapter was the only chapter from New Mexico to receive Honorable Recognition in the Quality Chapter Distinction program.

Thirty-nine students have earned Microsoft Office Certifications in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint through the Business/BPA class at Carlsbad High School or while at the National Leadership Conference. Those names will be released once all the testing is complete.

Three of the students have been named the State Champion in their respective exam for Certiport’s Spring Qualifier round for having the highest score on their exam in the state. J.D. McCormack was the state champion in Word 365. Jack Dodd was the state champion in Excel 365. Yuki Ye was the state champion in PowerPoint 365. Certiport has invited these three students to compete in the US National Championships in Dallas in June.
