One question librarians wish they heard more often is: “Can you recommend a good book?” Whether you’re young or young at heart, there’s always something magical about discovering a story that speaks to you.

With so many books to choose from, it can be helpful to have a few recommendations tailored to different age groups. Here’s a list of engaging reads for everyone in the family—from toddlers to adults—perfect for your next visit to the library.

For Young Children (Ages 2–6):

“The Very Last Castle” by Travis Jonker, illustrated by Mark Pett, is a charming picture book about curiosity, courage, and making friends. It’s ideal for preschoolers who enjoy stories about adventure and imagination.

Another great pick is “We Don’t Eat Our Classmates” by Ryan T. Higgins. With its humor and gentle life lessons, it’s a favorite for kids (and parents) looking for a fun way to ease school jitters.

For Early Readers (Ages 6–9):

“Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea” by Ben Clanton is the first book in a delightful graphic novel series that blends humor, friendship, and ocean facts.

For chapter book lovers, “Zoey and Sassafras” by Asia Citro offers a great mix of science and fantasy. Young readers will love following Zoey as she uses the scientific method to help magical creatures.

For Tweens (Ages 9–12):

“The Wild Robot” by Peter Brown tells the story of a robot who wakes up on a remote island and must learn to survive and connect with the animals around her. It’s both heartwarming and thought-provoking.

Fans of mystery and adventure should check out “City Spies” by James Ponti, a fast-paced, globe-trotting series starring a diverse cast of young secret agents.

For Teens (Ages 13–17):

“Legendborn” by Tracy Deonn reimagines Arthurian legend through a modern lens, blending magic, history, and social justice. It’s perfect for fantasy lovers who enjoy rich world-building and powerful themes.

If you prefer contemporary fiction, “Ain’t Burned All the Bright” by Jason Reynolds and Jason Griffin is a stunning mix of prose and art that captures the weight and resilience of life during difficult times.

For Adults:

“The House in the Cerulean Sea” by TJ Klune is a heartwarming fantasy novel about an unlikely caseworker who finds joy, purpose, and love at a home for magical children. Uplifting and quirky, it’s a great escape read.

For those who enjoy historical fiction, “The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek” by Kim Michele Richardson tells the inspiring story of a packhorse librarian in 1930s Kentucky—a celebration of books, courage, and connection.

Final Thoughts:

Great books open doors to new worlds and new ideas, and there’s something out there for every reader. If you’re ever in doubt about what to read next, your local librarians are always happy to help. Whether you’re looking for an inspiring story, a laugh-out-loud tale, or a thought-provoking journey, the library has books to satisfy every reader—at every age. Happy reading!
