Carlsbad High’s Cavemen and Cavegirl wrestlers recently registered big wins over the Roswell Coyotes and Clovis Wildcats. The victories left both teams sitting at 2-0 in the race for this year’s District 4/5A Dual Meet Championship.
On Thursday, January 23, the Cavemen upended the Coyotes 41-30, while the Cavegirls kayoed the Coyotes 42-9. On Saturday, January 25, the Cavemen picked up their second straight win with a 41-36 triumph over Clovis. The Cavegirls followed suit by downing the Cats 42-24.
In picking up the two wins, Carlsbad High’s boys registered nine falls and two technical falls, the Cavegirls 11 falls. Highlighting those efforts were Cavegirl Andrea Ramirez and Caveman Francisco Calderon, both seniors.
While wrestling in Clovis, Ramirez, wrestling at 100 lbs., registered a fall in just .11 seconds. Calderon, grappling at 152, logged a fall in only .17 seconds.
With the girls’ regional tournament set to get underway on February 7-8, and the boys’ on February 14-15, CHS head coach Mark Pratt said his kids appear to be peaking at the right time.
“We’re seeing a lot of really good efforts from our kids right now. And they couldn’t be coming at a better time,” said Pratt. “For our kids, the road to state lies at our regional tournament. The top seven wrestlers in each class, plus a wildcard, will punch their tickets to move on to state. We hope to do well there in both boys’ and girls’ divisions this year.”
This year’s girls’ regional tournament will take place in Belen, the boys’ in Las Cruces. The state tournament, set for February 21-22, will be held at Rio Rancho.
Note: Both the Cavemen and Cavegirl wrestlers battled the Hobbs Eagles on Thursday, January 30, in Hobbs for this year’s District 4/5A Dual Meet Championship. Both boys’ and girls’ teams entered the match at 2-0. (Results of that match will be posted in the February 7 edition of the Carlsbad Local.)
