As the CHS spring sports calendar winds down, the Carlsbad Cavemen and Cavegirl track teams participated in their final pre-district tune-up of the season at the Lovington Ross Black Relays on Thursday, April 30.

Results of the meet will be posted in the May 8 edition of the Carlsbad Local.

Wells, Ananins Shine at Alamo

Despite the Bob Sepulveda Invitational being somewhat trimmed down, CHS head coach Charles Millar said he was pleased with the efforts he got from his Cavemen and Cavegirl charges in Alamogordo on Friday, April 23.

“As usual, our kids competed well at the Bob Sepulveda Invitational,” said Millar. “However, the meet allowed only two entries per open event, which limited the number of kids we could bring. But, overall, we had a great day.”

Out in front for the Cavegirls was senior Atria Wells, who grabbed first-place finishes in both the shot put and discus.

Wells tossed the shot 39’3” and launched the discus 119’3.5” en route to her double gold medal performance.

“A PR in the discus and almost back up to 40’ in the shot, Atria had a great day,” said Millar. “She also tried her spin and looked great!”

Cavegirl Sophia Trujillo also had a big day in the shot put competition. With a toss of 39’9.5”, she was awarded a silver medal for placing second.

Cassie Bilestein also medaled for the Cavegirls. With a leap of 16’9.5” in the Long Jump, she picked up a bronze medal for placing third.

Caveman Lennon Ananins, who continues to make strides each week, turned a few heads during the javelin competition.

The Carlsbad junior threw the spear 152’10” to capture first place and the gold medal that went with it.

“It’s his first win at a big meet! He’s been throwing great lately,” said the CHS coach. “He’s just 6” away from qualifying for state. We’re confident he’ll hit the state qualifying mark within the next two weeks.”

Braden Florez also placed in the javelin. Finishing third, with a throw of 141’0”, he earned a bronze medal.

Silver medals for placing second went out to the Cavemen’s 1600 meter sprint medley relay team and high jumper Marley Munoz.

CHS’s sprint medley team, comprised of Trey Barta, Lennon Ananins, Bryan King, and Rex Reynolds, posted a time of 3:44.11 en route to their runner-up finish in Alamogordo.

“Our sprint medley relay team ran a great race. Like Lennon, they’re very close to qualifying for state, too,” remarked Millar. “We still have a couple of more meets on our schedule, so, with a good effort, they’re very capable of punching their tickets to state as well.”

Munoz, on his way to placing second in the high jump, cleared the bar with a leap of 6’2”. Jonah Moyers, who also cleared 6’2”, finished third.

“We got great efforts from both Marley and Jonah,” said Millar. “Jonah had one more miss at 6’0” than did Marley, which is why he finished third.”
