Storytimes have long been a cherished part of library programming. Songs, stories, movement, and laughter fill the room as children and caregivers gather together each week. Connections are made—not only between librarians and families, but also among parents, grandparents, and caregivers who find support and friendship through a shared experience.

Parenting is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world, but it can also be one of the most challenging. At times, it can feel isolating. As the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child.” For many families, library storytime becomes part of that village. It is a welcoming space where families can connect, share experiences, and build relationships within the community. While the social and emotional benefits are significant, they are only the beginning of what storytime offers.

Storytimes help children develop the foundational skills they need to become successful readers and lifelong learners. Early literacy is not about teaching young children to read before they enter school. Instead, it focuses on building the skills that prepare children to learn to read when they are ready. Research has consistently shown that children who are exposed to language-rich experiences in their early years are better prepared for success in school and beyond.

Libraries promote five key early literacy practices: talking, reading, singing, playing, and writing. These simple activities are incorporated into every storytime program offered at the library.

When children and caregivers talk together, they build vocabulary and learn how language works. Reading introduces children to new words, ideas, and concepts while helping them develop listening and comprehension skills. Singing slows down language and helps children hear the smaller sounds within words, an important step in learning to read. Play encourages creativity, problem-solving, and social development while allowing children to explore the world around them. Writing activities, even simple scribbles and drawings, help children understand that marks on a page have meaning and prepare them for future reading and writing.

Every song sung, every fingerplay performed, and every story shared contributes to a child’s development. These activities may appear simple, but they are carefully chosen to support learning while keeping children engaged and having fun.

At the Carlsbad Public Library, we are proud to offer storytimes for children of all ages. Whether it is a baby experiencing books for the first time, a toddler dancing to a favorite song, or a preschooler eagerly answering questions during a story, each child is building important skills that will benefit them for years to come.

Storytime is about much more than books. It is about creating joyful learning experiences, fostering a love of reading, and strengthening the bonds between children and their caregivers. It is about building community, one story at a time. We invite families to join us each week and discover the magic, learning, and connections that make storytime one of the library’s most valuable programs.
