Cavemen -Cavegirls host Alamogordo Tigers By Don Eskins The 2021-22 prep basketball season tipped off this week for the Cavemen and Cavegirls.The Cavemen, on the road for their season inaugural on Tuesday, downed the Gadsden Panthers 68-36 to kickoff the new prep season at 1-0.However, the Cavegirls start in 2021-22 has been a bit more difficult. On Monday they suffered a narrow 38-37 loss to the Organ Mt. Knights and on Tuesday they fell to El Paso Pebble Hills, 64-48, to open up the new year at 0-2. Both the Cavemen and Cavegirls will be at home on Saturday when they'll play host to the Alamogordo Tigers.The Lady Tigers will come to Carlsbad at 1-0 after defeating the Ruidoso Warriors 54-30 earlier this week. For the Tigers, Saturday's game with the Cavemen will serve as their season opener. Cavemen 68 , Gadsden 36Gadsden High had no answer for Damian Perez Tuesday night. Perez dropped in 34 points in leading the Cavemen to a 68-36 season opening victory over the Panthers. "Damian shot the ball extremely well," said Caveman head coach John Zumbrun. "Eighteen of those points came on six shots from beyond the three point line."Gadsden was never really in the ballgame. CHS jumped out in front 43-24 at the half and outscored the Panthers 25-12 in the second to pick up the 68-36 win.Other scoring leaders for the Cavemen were Devin Mcwright with 10 and Taylan Gonzales with 9. first quarter lead," said Cavegirl head coach Matt Enloe. "We didn't handle the pressure and we didn't shoot very well. But these are things we can fix."Leading the Cavegirls was Allie Myers who dropped in 19 points. Also scoring in double figures for Carlsbad High were Morgan Boatwright and Abbey Dugan, each with 10.Cavegirls 37, Organ Mt. 38Trailing the Organ Mt. Knights 22-17 at the half the Cavegirls battled back to take a 37-36 lead, following two free throws by Alexa Dugan, with only thirty seconds left in the fourth and final quarter of play.However following an Organ Mt. missed three point shot, on the ensuing play, the Knights were able to get the rebound and put it up and in to get the 38-37 win. "Overall I think our kids played pretty well," said Cavegirl head coach Matt Enloe. "After falling behind 38-37, with only twenty seconds showing on the clock, our kids kept battling. We did have opportunities to score again, we just couldn't get the ball to fall in the bucket."Allie Myers, with 16 points, led all Cavegirl scorers.
