The Cavemen and Cavegirl track and field teams competed in the Gene Love Relays in Portales on Friday, April 10.

While Carlsbad’s kids were ready for a great day of competition, as they got off the bus, the weather wasn’t.

“Portales was a good meet for our kids, but we ran into a real problem with some bad weather. As a result, we were not able to finish the meet,” said CHS head track coach Charles Millar. “However, despite the bad weather and the meet being canceled early, we did have a few outstanding efforts.

“Although we had nobody new qualify for state, following his effort of 156-6.00 in the javelin, Lennon Aninans is now only six inches away from doing so,” he said. “Also, Rex Reynolds, with a time of 2:03 in the 800 run, posted the best effort in District 4/5A this season.”

Reynolds’ runner-up finish in the 800 meter run turned out to be the Cavemen’s top performance at the meet. For his second-place effort, he was awarded a silver medal.

Aninans’ effort in the javelin earned him a bronze medal for a third-place finish. Also picking up bronze medals for finishing third were Javion Scott, who turned in a time of 10:51.88 in the 3200 run, and the Cavemen’s 4x800 relay team, who registered a time of 9:08.81. The unit was comprised of Kaleb Vasquez, Caisen Smith, Kleyvin Hernandez, and Aiden Mendez.

Three individual efforts, along with a good showing by their 4x100 relay team, registered top performances for the Cavegirls.

Placing fourth in individual events were Faith Rivera, javelin, 82-0.50; Rainelle Ruiz, 3200 meter run, 13:17.64; and Chaselynn Casey, long jump, 14-5.00.

Comprising CHS’s fourth-place 4x100 relay team, who turned in a time of 52.38, were Haley Long, Chaselynn Casey, Nicki Abeyta, and Kaylee Dowdy.

The CHS track teams will compete in the Clovis Invitational on Friday, April 17. Action is scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m.

Note: Due to several CHS activities during the weekend of April 10-11, several members of the CHS track team (boys and girls) were unable to attend the Portales meet.
