Research is something we all do, whether we realize it or not. From planning a vacation, to writing a school paper, to comparing products before making a big purchase—research is part of our daily lives. But the truth is, with so much information available online, it can feel overwhelming to know where to start or how to separate reliable sources from misinformation. That’s where your library comes in.

At the Carlsbad Public Library, we want to help you research like a pro. Our staff and our tools are here to guide you through the process so you can find accurate, trustworthy, and useful information. Whether you’re a student, a professional, or simply curious, here are some techniques and resources that will make your research journey smoother.

Start with a clear question.

Professional researchers know that success begins with focus. Instead of trying to find “everything about history,” narrow your topic to something like, “How did railroads change life in New Mexico in the 1800s?” A clear, specific question will guide your search and help you avoid getting lost in irrelevant results.

Use the library catalog and databases.

Google may give you millions of results, but not all of them are accurate or free to access. The library’s catalog and electronic databases are designed for reliable searching. Through our system, you can access scholarly journals, eBooks, historical newspapers, language-learning tools, genealogy records, and much more—all at no cost to you. These resources are reviewed and vetted, which means you can trust what you find.

Take advantage of advanced search tools.

Library databases allow you to filter by date, subject, type of publication, or even peer-reviewed status. Learning to use these filters can save you time and help you zero in on the most relevant materials. It’s like having a personal assistant who knows how to sift through mountains of data for just what you need.

Ask a librarian.

This might be the best-kept secret of all. Librarians are trained research experts. We can help you brainstorm search terms, identify the right database, or point you toward specialized collections. Think of us as your partners in the process—we’re here to make sure you don’t waste time going in circles.

Keep track of your sources.

Whether you’re working on a school paper or a family genealogy project, it’s important to record where your information came from. Many of our databases offer built-in citation tools, making it easy to save references in the correct format. Staying organized from the beginning saves headaches later.

Evaluate what you find.

Even reliable sources should be read with a critical eye. Ask yourself: Who wrote this? Why was it written? Is the information current? Professional researchers know that evaluating information is just as important as finding it.

Research doesn’t have to be intimidating. With the right tools and a little guidance, anyone can learn to research like a pro. So, next time you’re faced with a big question—whether it’s academic, personal, or practical—remember that your library is here to help you find the answers.
