Hobbs in Town, Cavemen Face the Eagles

Well, it’s here, and to nobody’s surprise, it’s going to be a big one!

On Friday night, February 6, in the Cavern City, the Cavemen and Hobbs Eagles will face off for sole possession of first place in this year’s race for the District 4/5A crown.

The Class 5A 10th-ranked Cavemen are 15-6 on the year and, following a 64-51 victory over Roswell and a 65-59 win over Clovis, are 2-0 in conference play.

The seventh-ranked 14-8 Eagles, having posted victories over Clovis, 76-48, and Roswell, 68-66, are also 2-0 in conference play.

The JVs will open up the night’s action at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity at 7 p.m.

Cavemen 65, Clovis 59

Carlsbad High kept their hopes alive for a district championship with a 65-59 victory over the Clovis Wildcats. The clash took place in Carlsbad on Tuesday night, February 3.

Leading at the half by 10, 35-25, CHS held on during the second, 30-34, to pick up their 15th win of the season versus just six losses.

Shane Sullivan had another big night on the court. The 6’4” Cavemen center scored a team high of 24 points. He also had eight rebounds and four blocked shots.

Point guard Zenas Huerta, with 16 points, five boards, and three assists, also had a big night offensively.

Cavemen Cage the Coyotes 64-51

Carlsbad High’s Cavemen basketball team opened up 2025-26 District 4/5A play with a 13-point, 64-51 victory over the Roswell Coyotes in Roswell on Friday night, January 30.

CHS, up 31-20 at the half, traded buckets with the Otes during the final two quarters, 33-31, to pick up the win.

En route to the victory, CHS torched the nets, hitting 64 percent of their two-point attempts, 16-26, and 44.4 percent of their threes, 8-18.

CHS center Shane Sullivan, with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocked shots, led all CHS scorers. Zenas Huerta also enjoyed a double-digit scoring night. The 5’10” point guard scored 10 points. He also had six assists.
