Emotions Run High at Cottonwood Elementary

What started as a standard meeting with acknowledgments of departing staff, followed by service awards, intentionally turned into a surprise celebration honoring the international teachers from the Philippines who have served the school for the last five years.

Seven teachers participated in an exchange program with J-1 Visas, which are now up, so they are returning home. Camaraderie was evident among the staff during the lively celebration, which was filled with tear-jerking farewell speeches, heartfelt appreciation, and lots of laughter and dancing, with staff singing karaoke-style and taking snapshots against a USA-themed backdrop and props.

Donna Johns, Principal of Cottonwood Elementary, spoke to the staff while complementary music was interjected into the pauses when tokens of appreciation were distributed to the international teachers.

“We are incredibly thankful for your dedication to Cottonwood students, your pursuit of excellence, and your love for learning,” said Johns. “You came to America and not only taught students, but you taught us as well.”

Expressing gratitude for the sacrifices made by the teachers and the difference that they made to Cottonwood, Johns said to them, “Your kindness, commitment, culture, and passion have enriched our school community in countless ways. While we are sad to see you go, we know you will be a light to all students you encounter in the future.”

Katie Jo Castaneda spoke on behalf of the third-grade team where Janelle Gomez and Cheryl Lasuta taught. With tears, Castaneda recalled experiences and expressed gratitude to the teachers, wishing them well.

She said, “Teaching alongside the two of you has been such a blessing. We truly can’t imagine these years without your friendship, support, laughter, and dedication. There is something so special about working with people who not only love what they do, but pour their hearts into every student, every lesson, and every single day, and that is exactly who you both are.”

On behalf of the second-grade team, Elena Melvin addressed Florilou Pantallano and Dione Anora, saying that the team is “forever grateful” while thanking them for all they have done.

“I remember how excited we were when you joined our team and how you came ready to work, full of ideas. I would not be the teacher that I am without you guys. I’ve learned so much from you. Our team has grown, and we truly are a family. It’s really hard to say goodbye to a piece of our hearts because that’s what you guys are,” she said.

Bri Ramirez addressed Diana Quinto, who served as a Special Ed teacher for the school. “From the fifth-grade team, we can’t express how much we have enjoyed having you here,” she said, mentioning the joy “Ms. Q” brings in the mornings and how her excitement and the life that she brings to the entire hallway will be missed.

Aside from the data, she said, “The kids know that she cares, and they can feel it.” Providing multiple examples of Ms. Q’s contributions, she concluded by saying she hopes and prays she will get to come back. “I don’t know how I’m going to do this without you.”

Nancy Johnson, Assistant Principal of Cottonwood, addressed the group. “It has been such an honor to work alongside you and with you. It’s going to be so difficult without you. The work ethic you bring is amazing. I’ve never seen anybody work so hard. We’re going to miss you so much,” she said, adding, “You guys have been phenomenal with our kids. You show us what it is like to be all in.”

Kaila Ebare spoke on behalf of the first-grade team, delivering an emotional speech to Dr. Cheryl Chan and Marties Capul. “I’m just very grateful that I got to meet you guys and to be blessed that you are a part of our lives,” she said.

Johns ended by thanking the teachers for being their “forever friends.” She said, “Those seven teachers that we called up here, they often times led the district in their data. Every benchmark assessment, they led, not only in grade level or the school, but the whole district.” She also complimented the staff, saying they are “top notch.”

When the international teachers were asked what inspired them to come here and what their best experiences were, sharing the culture of their country while learning about the American culture was mentioned.

Experiencing the “American Dream,” having the opportunity to bring their families over to share what they experienced, having an impact on students while nurturing their talent and skills, growing as a teacher, and publishing student-authored books were among their best experiences.
