The 12th-ranked Carlsbad Cavegirls were heavy underdogs when they took the floor against the sixth-ranked Clovis Wildcats in Carlsbad on Tuesday night, January 28.
Underdogs or not, the Cavegirls, in a heartbreaker, came within a single point of upsetting Clovis before falling to the Wildcats, 35-34.
Abbey Dugan and Jasmynn Gonzales each scored 11 points to pace CHS’s offensive attack.
“Clovis is 17-3 this year, and there’s a reason for that. They’re a well-coached team with a lot of very good athletes,” said Cavegirl head coach Matt Enloe. “But our girls played with them, and we did have our chances to win. The ball just wouldn’t fall in the bucket for us.”
The loss dropped CHS, in their conference inaugural, to 0-1 in district play and 15-6 on the year.
The Cavegirls have now turned their attention to the Roswell Coyotes. The Otes, also 0-1 in district play following an 85-39 loss to the top-ranked Hobbs Eagles, sit at 13-8 on the year and are ranked 13th this week by MaxPreps.
CHS will square off with the Coyotes at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 31, in the Alien City.
“Roswell is always tough, especially on their home court. So, to compete with them, we’re going to have to be at our best,” said Enloe. “But that’s pretty much true for all of the teams we’ll be facing in our district this year. After Roswell, we’ll be taking on the Hobbs Eagles, the No. 1 team in the state. So, we’re going to have to be focused and ready to go every time we take the floor.”
CHS and the Hobbs Eagles will tangle with each other on Friday, February 7, in Carlsbad.
